Why Have SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) Holdings Dropped As Gold Soars?

The SPDR Gold Shares Trust (GLD) reported that holdings of gold bullion remained unchanged from the previous week, after dropping by 39.67 tonnes for the week ending August 24th.

On a year to date basis, GLD gold holdings have declined by 48.41 tonnes as the price of gold has increased by $425 (30.6%) from the first of the year.  Why would the GLD show a decline in gold holdings as the price of gold has soared?   Even more interesting, the GLD reached a record high of gold holdings on June 29, 2010 when it held 1,320.47 tonnes and gold was selling at $1,234.50.  From June 29, 2010, while gold has soared by $579 per ounce, the GLD has actually seen a decline in gold holdings of 88.16 tonnes.

The decline of gold holdings by the GLD as the price of gold bullion has skyrocketed indicates that investor preference for gold investment has diversified.  The demand for physical gold has soared as the world financial system becomes more precarious with each passing day.  Confidence in paper assets is becoming more fragile as hapless central banks desperately print money and drive rates to zero in a futile attempt to restore economic growth.  Investors looking for the ultimate safe haven feel more comfortable  holding physical gold.

There have been questions raised about  the safe keeping and even the existence of the gold held by the GLD.  Although these concerns appear to be unwarranted, the financial panic of 2008 blatantly exposed the fact that even institutions considered to be rock solid wound up failing.  (Also see GATA dispatch - How exchange traded fund GLD lets you pretend to own gold).

The SPDR website stresses that the gold with the SPDR Trust is deposited in an allocated account.  According to the SPDR Gold Trust,  "An allocated account is an account with a bullion dealer, which may also be a bank, to which individually identified gold bars owned by the account holder are credited.  The account holder has full ownership of the gold bars and, except as instructed by the account holder, the bullion dealer may not trade, lease or lend the bars."

Another reason why the GLD gold holdings have not expanded is competition from numerous other gold trusts such as the Sprott Physical Gold Trust which has advantages over the SPDR Gold Trust.

In addition, the shares of many gold mining companies are selling at extreme discounts and investors may be moving funds from gold trusts such as the GLD into mining shares (see Gold Shares Are Positioned For Explosive Move Up).

The GLD currently holds 39.6 million ounces of gold valued at $71.8 billion.

Meanwhile, the case for holding gold grows stronger as concerns about the stability of the world financial system continue to increase.

The Wall Street Journal disclosed today that Goldman Sachs, in a confidential report, estimates that European banks will need as much as $1 trillion in additional capital and that the current situation in world markets is similar to those that preceded the 2008 financial panic.

According to the Wall Street Journal, strategist Alan Brazil of Goldman told clients "Here we go again.  Solving a debt problem with more debt has not solved the underlying problem. In the US, Treasury debt growth financed the US consumer but has not had enough of an impact on job growth. Can the US continue to depreciate the world's base currency?"

GLD and SLV Holdings (metric tonnes)

Holdings of the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) dropped by 89.38 tonnes this week after increasing by 109.08 tonnes for the week ending August 24th.  The SLV currently holds 313.4 million ounces of silver valued at $13 billion.

Gold Mining Stocks Break Out To New Highs; 3 Gold Stocks That Should Double

The divergence between the performance of gold bullion and gold stocks seems to be coming to an end.  Both the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) and the Gold Bugs Index ($HUI) have broken out to new highs as investors move into undervalued gold mining shares.

During the initial stages of the gold bull market, gold stocks significantly outperformed gold bullion.  From October of 2000 to June of 2008 gold stocks, as measured by the PHLX Gold/Silver Index (XAU), rose 345% compared to a gain of 252% for gold bullion.

Since 2008 gold stocks have significantly underperformed bullion as gold prices increased by over $1,000 per ounce.    As a result, many gold stocks are selling at bargain prices based on increased earnings and the value of proven gold reserves.

Investors have a wide variety of options for investing in gold mining shares including ETFs and gold stock mutual funds.  One of the best performing gold funds is the Tocqueville Gold Fund (TGLDX) run by John Hathaway.  TGLDX has achieved an average annual return of 26% over the past 10 years.   An investment of $10,000 in the Tocqueville Gold Fund made in June 2001 was worth $102,929 as of June 2011.

For investors who prefer to invest in individual gold mining shares, here's a short list of three gold mining stocks that could easily double in price.

Newmont Mining (NEM) is a large cap gold mining company with proven and probable gold reserves of 93.5 million ounces.  NEM has a strong balance sheet, is forecasting an increase in gold production of 35% over the next six years and pays a cash dividend of 50 cents per share (see A Large Cap Gold Stock That Could Double in Price). NEM hit a new all time high today.

Kinross Gold (KGC) is selling at a large discount to the value of its gold reserves.  One value investor is forecasting a price target of $27 per share (see How Patient Investors Can Buy Gold At $250 Per Ounce).  KGC closed Thursday at $18.18, up $0.40.

Richmont Mines (RIC) is a junior gold producer.  Earnings for the second quarter of 2011 increased from $0.01 per share to $0.16 per share compared to the prior year.  RIC hit a new high of $12.03 at yesterday's close.

US Mint Sales: Debuting Glacier Three-Coin Set Tops Proof Silver Eagles

Glacier National Park Quarter Three-Coin Set

For the first time since their release, the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle did not take the #1 spot on the latest weekly United States Mint sales chart. The product taking it over was the debuting Glacier Three-coin set. Collectors ordered 10,620 of them between their launch on Tuesday, August 23 and Monday, August 29.

Sales for the Glacier Three-Coin Set started slower than the first six sets. The Gettysburg Three-Coin Set opened the highest with 12,500 in sales; Mount Hood Three-Coin Set had 11,282; Grand Canyon Three-Coin Set had 12,418; Yosemite Three-Coin Set had 11,441; Yellowstone Three-Coin Set had 11,115; and Hot Springs Three-Coin Set started at 10,684.

One reason the Glacier set beat the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles was the fact that the Silver Eagles were suspended on Wednesday, August 24 until Monday, August 29. So the 10,593 Silver Eagles that did sell were purchased during the first few days of the week. When sales resumed on Monday, the US Mint raised their price by $8.50 from $59.95 to $68.45. It should be noted collectors purchased a total of 726,921 Silver Eagles before the price hike.

Rising coin prices and sales suspensions could be to blame for the slowdown in other United States Mint sales. Only 20 products managed to gain more than their prior week's increases, compared to the 68 US coin products that overachieved in the last report. The 9/11 silver medals were two that drastically slowed down in the weeks following their price increase. Only 437 of the strikes from West Point were picked up compared to 10,377 previously, and the Philadelphia strikes tumbled by a -19 after advancing by 7,131 in the last round.

Several more products also took a nose dive in this report. To name a few... the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Coin Covers were reduced by -855, and the Olympic Quarter Two-Roll sets fell by -264. The totals for two other products for the Olympic Quarters dropped as well. Its 100-coin bags from Philadelphia slid by -46 and its 100-coin bag from Denver declined by -61. Generally sales reductions are attributed to returns, problem orders, cancellations, and accounting corrections.

The Grand Canyon Silver Uncirculated Coin officially sold out Wednesday, August 31, when the United States Mint stopped selling the coin and moved it to their online "No Longer Available" page. Its latest tally grew by 620 on the chart below and landed at 27,774. Since its published total mintage was 27,000 coins, collectors will have to wait and see for the final number.

Bullion American Silver Eagles were still the star in the investment arena. They catapulted by another 922,000 to push their total to a remarkable 28,993,000 on Thursday. August closed out the month at 3,679,500, which was the second best month for the Silver Eagles this year and the fourth best month in history.

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest United States Mint sales totals as of Monday, August 29, 2011. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Thursday, September 1. (NLA = No Longer Available.)

US Mint Sales: Vicksburg Quarters Top 2011 Proof Silver Eagles

Based on the latest data, the United States Mint enjoyed several days of robust coin sales even though several products experienced temporary suspensions due to rising costs of precious metals.

2011 Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter Bags and Rolls US Mint image of the Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter Bags and Rolls. Their debut sales were released by the US Mint this week.

80 of the Mint's collector products outperformed their previous weekly gains compared to just 20 in the last report. At the top of the US Mint sales chart were the debuting Vicksburg quarters. They were followed by the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle, the 2011 Proof Set, and the 9/11 Silver Medal from West Point.

For the second week in a row, a debuting product stole the spotlight from the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles, which had held the top spot for nearly two months. This time, the most popular numismatic item was the Vicksburg quarters two-roll set. An impressive 18,719 sold, while the 100-coin bags racked up 2,457 and 2,379 in inaugural sales for the Philadelphia and Denver bags, respectively. The Vicksburg quarters products launched on Monday, August 29.

The 2011 Proof Silver Eagles were still in high demand though. Another 8,944 were purchased, bringing their new sales total up to 735,865. In the prior week, before the Mint raised the Silver Eagle's price, 10,593 were taken.

Also debuting on the charts were the Lucy Hayes First Spouse Gold Coins. Collectors, who pounced on their opportunity to buy them on the first day, September 1, were the lucky ones, because the all of the First Spouse coins were suspended the next day. When sales resumed on Wednesday, their prices rose by $50 each. The lucky buyers scooped up 1,265 of the proofs and 857 of the uncirculated.

As for bullion sales, they practically came to a standstill compared to the booming activity during August. The American Silver Eagles rose by 133,000 and the one ounce Gold Eagle added 3,000 since the last report. The remaining fractional Gold Eagles, 24-karat American Buffalo, and five ounce America the Beautiful coins were all silent.

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest United States Mint sales totals as of Monday, September 5, 2011. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Thursday, September 8. (NLA = No Longer Available.)

Double EagleMike is prepared for another routine summer in Pensacola with his marine biologist father. But plans suddenly change and Mike finds himself on Shipwreck Island near the site where a Confederate ship sank and right in the middle of a century-old mystery! Although the ship was rumored to be carrying newly minted gold coins, no trace of the wreck and not even a single piece of Confederate gold has ever been found. Mike and his new friend Kyle are intrigued by a salvage ship anchored just offshore. Some say it was brought in by fortune hunters searching for the long-lost Confederate ship and its treasure. But when the boys scale a fence at the fort on the island and explore a section closed off to the public, they realize that the fortune hunters may be looking in the wrong place. There in the sand-covered floor of an abandoned chamber they spot something shiny: an old double-eagle gold coin. Mike and Kyle agree to keep their discovery a secret and start their own investigation into the shipwreck and the missing gold.

Dale Earnhardt Colorized Quarter

Dale Earnhardt Colorized QuarterTwo of the most popular collectibles today team up! Now you can own a 2001 North Carolina State Quarter Colorized with Dale Earnhardt Sr.s portrait. Colorized coins are one of the fastest growing collectibles today.

As racing fans know, North Carolina was the birthplace and hometown of Dale Earnhardt Sr. and the U.S. Mint's State Quarter program is one of the most highly collected items today. The North Carolina quarter, the 12th in the series and the second quarter to be released in the 2001 series, highlights the famous 1903 photograph of the "First Flight". The North Carolina quarter commemorates the historic feat that took place on December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina with the first successful flight of a heavier-than-air, self propelled flying machine. The craft, called the Flyer, traveled a distance of approximately 37 meters (120 feet) on its first flight and soared even further as one of the most significant human achievements in history. The North Carolina Quarter was issued on March 12, 2001 and is no longer minted.

US Mint Sales: Proof Buffalo Gold, Five Ounce Silver Coins Debut

2011 American Buffalo Gold Proof CoinThe US Mint released four new coins last week, resulting in five new products and solidly higher numismatic sales overall.

The debut of the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential $1 Coin Rolls, the Yellowstone National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, the 2011 Proof Buffalo Gold Coin, and the Olympic National Park Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin all show up in this week's US Mint sales figures.

Grant's Presidential $1 Coin Rolls went on sale for $39.95. Buyers have a choice between the 25-coin rolls from the mint facility in Philadelphia (P) or Denver (D). Between their release on Thursday, May 19 and Sunday, May 22, collectors took in 40,119 of Grant's rolls. Broken out, 20,174 were (P) and 19,945 were (D) rolls.

Those numbers were slower than Andrew Johnson's $1 Roll release which totaled 45,734, but Johnson's inaugural sales included an extra day. The table below demonstrates the last five $1 roll launches, although the number of debut sales' days do vary.

Yellowstone National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin is the second numismatic five ounce silver coin from the US Mint. It opened on Tuesday, May 17 for $279.95 with an order limit of one coin per household. By Sunday, 24,626 collectors placed their orders. That number was quite close to Hot Springs' debut of "approximately 25,000." If sales of the Yellowstone silver coin follow the same pattern as Hot Springs', then the Mint will initiate a waiting list for the item roughly one week from today.

The Olympic National Park Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin was made available Monday, but only to the Mint's network of participating silver Authorized Purchasers. It was the eighth one in the bullion series that has been selling out. First day sales were reported at 60,700.

The 2011 American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin also launched on Thursday, May 19. The price of the item might have hurt its beginning on the market. The proof Buffalo started at $1,760.00 and buyers scooped up 5,782 by Sunday, which was significantly less than last year's debut of 15,071. The piece was more than $200 lower when it first appeared in 2010 at $1,510.

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly US Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest US Mint sales totals as of Sunday, May 22, 2011. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, May 25. The United States Mint announced the 24-karat 2011 American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin would be released on Thursday, May 19, beginning at 12:00 noon Eastern Time.

Its cost to collectors will be determined just prior to the launch. The US Mint's pricing policy bases its collector gold coin prices on the average weekly London Fix price of the yellow metal and the direction it is trending each Wednesday. The one ounce Buffalo coin would start at $1,810.00 if the weekly average of gold stays between $1,500.00 and $1,549.99 an ounce.

The annual coin is the sixth release in the series that begun in 2006 that includes collector proof and investor bullion strikes. The Mint began selling this year's bullion versions on March 14, 2011, and the 2010-dated Buffalo proof issue just recently sold out at the Mint.

The coin's designs on the obverse and reverse are based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel by James Earle Fraser. The proof coin carries the W mint mark on its obverse while the bullion version does not, although both coins are struck at West Point.

For reference, the United States Mint press release announcing the set follows:

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint will begin accepting orders for the 2011 American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin on May 19 at noon Eastern Time (ET). There is no mintage or household order limit for this product.

The designs on the obverse (heads side) and reverse (tails side) of the 24-karat one-ounce gold coin are based on the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel by James Earle Fraser.

The obverse features the profile of a Native American and the inscriptions LIBERTY, 2011, the initial F for Fraser and the W mint mark for the United States Mint at West Point. The coin's reverse features the revered American Buffalo-also known as the bison-along with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, $50, 1OZ.and .9999 FINE GOLD.

Each American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin is presented in an elegant hardwood box with a matte finish and a faux leather inset. The coin is exhibited on a platform which can stand at an angle for display when the box is open. A Certificate of Authenticity is also included.

Pricing for the 2011 American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin will be based on the United States Mint's pricing strategy for numismatic products containing precious metals located at here.

Orders will be accepted at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog or at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order by calling 1-888-321-MINT (6468). A shipping and handling fee of $4.95 will be added to all domestic orders.

History of the Challenge Coin:

The Challenge Coin originated in the United States Armed Forces and represents PRIDE in one's unit. Commanders awarded them to soldiers to recognize an important contribution to the unit. The coins became sought after as they represented COURAGE and HONOR having "done the job" for his unit, his teammates.
As they became popular an additional use was discovered:

When a soldier greets a fellow unit member in a social setting, he slaps his coin down and the challenge is made -if the unit member does not produce his own coin - he buys! But if he meets the challenge and slaps his coin down, then he enjoys a free beverage and another bond of PRIDE and FRIENDSHIP is celebrated.

2011 American Silver Eagle Proof Coin Release

One of the United States Mint's most popular products is coming this week. The 2011 American Silver Eagle Proof Coin will launch on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 12 noon Eastern Time from the U.S. Mint for $59.95 each.

2011 American Silver Eagle Proof Coin 2011 American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

Collectors may order up to 100 units per household of the Silver Eagles at the U.S. Mint's website (http://www.usmint.gov/catalog) or by phone at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468) upon the coin's release.

The .999 fine silver coin comes in only one size, which is one ounce. It is struck in proof quality and bears the "W" mint mark on the reverse side. A Certificate of Authenticity is included with the coin which ships within a U.S. Mint blue presentation case.

The designs on the American Silver Eagle are said to be some of the most beautiful among U.S. coinage, and have remained the same since the series began in 1986. The obverse features Adolph A. Weinman's "Walking Liberty" that was used on the half dollar between 1916 and 1947. The reverse by John Mercanti portrays a heraldic eagle with shield and is said to symbolize the nation's strength and endurance.

Sales for the proof Silver Eagles are expected to be hot and furious. Last November 273,212 sold of the 2010 issue in the first three days and a total of 860,000 sold in less than two months before the U.S. Mint deemed the coins "sold out." In 2008, collectors scooped up 700,979 of them between August and December. The Mint did not sell any collector version Silver Eagles in 2009 due to unprecedented demand for the bullion version. A maximum mintage for the 2011 proofs has not been announced.

For reference, the United States Mint's press release regarding the launch date for the 2011 American Silver Eagle Proof Coin follows.

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint will open sales for the 2011 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin at noon Eastern Time (ET) on June 30, 2011. The coins will be priced at $59.95 each. Orders will be limited to 100 units per household.

The obverse (heads side) of the coin features a rendition of Adolph A. Weinman's Lady Liberty in full stride, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. The reverse (tails side), by former United States Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, features a heraldic eagle with shield, an olive branch in the right talon and arrows in the left.

The American Eagle Silver Proof Coin contains .999 silver. The one-ounce coin is struck on specially burnished blanks and carries the "W" mint mark, indicating its production at the United States Mint at West Point. Each coin is encapsulated in protective plastic and placed in a blue presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Orders will be accepted at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog/ or at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order at 1-888-321-MINT. The American Eagle Silver Proof Coin is also available for purchase through the United States Mint's Online Subscription Program. Customers who enroll in the program can have the American Eagle Silver Proof Coin and other select products automatically billed and shipped as each product becomes available. Note: To ensure that all members of the public have fair and equal access to United States Mint products, orders placed prior to the official on-sale date and time of June 30 2011, at noon ET shall not be deemed accepted by the United States Mint and will not be honored.
