Three new products debuted on the US Mint sales report, and the item at the top won the majority of attention. Starting with the most popular, they were the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles, the Grand Canyon 5 oz. Silver Uncirculated Coin, and Grant's Coin Cover.
The 2011 American Silver Eagle Proof Coin launched Thursday afternoon, June 30, 2011 and by Tuesday, July 5, collectors purchased 367,623 of the .999 fine silver specimens. The US Mint normally reports sales as of a Sunday, but the long holiday weekend postponed the numbers in this report to Tuesday. This year's Silver Eagle start was impressive considering last year's phenomenal beginning debuted at 273,212 within the first three days, and there was extra pent-up demand for the 2010 version since none were released in 2009.
Inaugural sales for the Grand Canyon 5 oz. Silver Uncirculated Coin hit 19,300 or 71% of its mintage between its release on Wednesday, June 29, and Tuesday. The figure was somewhat consistent with the previous three issues. The Yosemite version started with 20,511 after four days, the Yellowstone design had 24,626 within six days, while the Hot Springs item began with approximately 25,000 in four days. The strong start for the Grand Canyon coin demonstrated collector demand has remained high for the new series.
The Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Coin Cover also went on sale Wednesday, June 29. Opening figures showed 15,695 sold by Tuesday. It was a good start for the newest Presidential Coin Cover, since it was about the same as the debut sales of Andrew Johnson Presidential $1 Coin Covers. Johnson's Coin Cover started with 15,459 in four days when it was released in March.
