All eyes were on silver, the most recent US Mint sales figures unveiled. The 2011 Proof Silver Eagles and the 9/11 silver medals were among the top selling numismatic items. Also, the Yosemite National Park 5 oz Silver Uncirculated Coin officially sold out.
The 2011 Proof Silver Eagle's giant jump of 52,050 in the previous round now seems paltry compared to the latest 133,420 gain. The impressive surge was likely the result of the US Mint's removal of the 100 coin per household limit on July 15, and news of rising silver prices. Collectors and dealers have scooped up 593,461 Proof Silver Eagles after just 25 days on the market.
Explaining the spike for the 2011 September 11 National Medals, otherwise known as the 9/11 silver medals, is harder. The medals are on sale at an introductory price that will not expire until August 18. They were struck to "honor those who lost their lives, those who risked their lives to save others that day, and the endurance, resilience and hope of those who survived." Their latest US Mint sales showed a soaring 16,488 cumulative climb as compared to the two or three thousand increases over the past few weeks.
In the America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver Coin market, sales seem to be tapering off. The Yosemite uncirculated coin officially sold out and moved to the Mint's "No Longer Available" page. Collectors picked up another 759 of the uncirculated Grand Canyon coin, which was less than the 1,192 previously. 4,215 remained available. The Mount Hood issue launched at noon today.
16,300 of the America the Beautiful 5 oz silver bullion coins have sold to the Mint's network of Authorized Purchasers so far during July. That compared to 26,300 in June. The latest releases have been the Vicksburg coin on June 20 and the Chickasaw coin on July 18. The sales do not appear to be anywhere close to the Mint's initial allocation quantity of 126,700 for each 2011 design.
US Mint sales of bullion Silver Eagles clocked in at 2,510,000 for July with four days left in the month. As it stands, the month might end up as the slowest in 2011 and will need a gain of more than 257,000 to overtake March's total of 2,767,000. Annual sales are sitting at 24,813,500.
