US Mint Sales: Debuting Glacier Three-Coin Set Tops Proof Silver Eagles

Glacier National Park Quarter Three-Coin Set

For the first time since their release, the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle did not take the #1 spot on the latest weekly United States Mint sales chart. The product taking it over was the debuting Glacier Three-coin set. Collectors ordered 10,620 of them between their launch on Tuesday, August 23 and Monday, August 29.

Sales for the Glacier Three-Coin Set started slower than the first six sets. The Gettysburg Three-Coin Set opened the highest with 12,500 in sales; Mount Hood Three-Coin Set had 11,282; Grand Canyon Three-Coin Set had 12,418; Yosemite Three-Coin Set had 11,441; Yellowstone Three-Coin Set had 11,115; and Hot Springs Three-Coin Set started at 10,684.

One reason the Glacier set beat the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles was the fact that the Silver Eagles were suspended on Wednesday, August 24 until Monday, August 29. So the 10,593 Silver Eagles that did sell were purchased during the first few days of the week. When sales resumed on Monday, the US Mint raised their price by $8.50 from $59.95 to $68.45. It should be noted collectors purchased a total of 726,921 Silver Eagles before the price hike.

Rising coin prices and sales suspensions could be to blame for the slowdown in other United States Mint sales. Only 20 products managed to gain more than their prior week's increases, compared to the 68 US coin products that overachieved in the last report. The 9/11 silver medals were two that drastically slowed down in the weeks following their price increase. Only 437 of the strikes from West Point were picked up compared to 10,377 previously, and the Philadelphia strikes tumbled by a -19 after advancing by 7,131 in the last round.

Several more products also took a nose dive in this report. To name a few... the Ulysses S. Grant Presidential Coin Covers were reduced by -855, and the Olympic Quarter Two-Roll sets fell by -264. The totals for two other products for the Olympic Quarters dropped as well. Its 100-coin bags from Philadelphia slid by -46 and its 100-coin bag from Denver declined by -61. Generally sales reductions are attributed to returns, problem orders, cancellations, and accounting corrections.

The Grand Canyon Silver Uncirculated Coin officially sold out Wednesday, August 31, when the United States Mint stopped selling the coin and moved it to their online "No Longer Available" page. Its latest tally grew by 620 on the chart below and landed at 27,774. Since its published total mintage was 27,000 coins, collectors will have to wait and see for the final number.

Bullion American Silver Eagles were still the star in the investment arena. They catapulted by another 922,000 to push their total to a remarkable 28,993,000 on Thursday. August closed out the month at 3,679,500, which was the second best month for the Silver Eagles this year and the fourth best month in history.

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest United States Mint sales totals as of Monday, August 29, 2011. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Thursday, September 1. (NLA = No Longer Available.)
