US Mint Sales: Uncirculated Gold Eagle, 9/11 Silver Medals Ease

2011 American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coin

United States Mint coin sales slowed during the week following the Labor Day holiday, very much like it did last year. However, the recent temporary suspensions of several gold products, which lasted about five days, accounted for some of the reduced activity. Plus, prices were higher when sales finally resumed.

A few of the affected coins included the uncirculated Gold Eagle and the proof American Gold Buffalo. The uncirculated Gold Eagle suffered a huge reduction in demand, as its weekly sales increase went from 279 to only 32. The Gold Buffalo coin shared a similar fate with a near 50% reduction. Its weekly addition was 392 in the last round and 191 in this one.

Demand eased slightly for the 9/11 Silver Medals that the United States Mint issued in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. A combined total of 4,061 sold versus 5,151 in the previous week, moving the grand total to 161,528.

A $10 surcharge included in the price of the medals goes towards the funding of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum located at the World Trade Center site. The memorial opened on Monday, September 12, and includes two reflecting pools with cascading water, ringed with the names of those who lost their lives. The underground portion of the museum is still under construction and will not be ready until 2012. The funds raised by the commemorative 9/11 Silver Medals will support the museum's operations and maintenance after it is completed.

The highest selling numismatic product, advancing 5,081, was the 2011 proof Silver Eagle. Likewise, the bullion Silver Eagle was the top selling bullion product, with an increase of 751,000 during the last six days. The bullion one ounce Gold Eagle added 20,000 and the fractional one-tenth ounce Gold Eagle climbed by 15,000.

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends.
