US Mint Sales: Three Products Debut, Bullion Silver Eagles Pass 4 Million

Gettysburg National Military Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin The Gettysburg Silver Uncirculated Coin was one of the three US Mint products with debut sales.

Two of the three newest products debuted at the top of the US Mint sales report. Starting with the best-selling, the most recent items offered were the Olympic National Park Quarter Three-Coin Set, the 2011-P Gettysburg National Military Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, and the Hayes Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set.

The 2011 Olympic National Park Quarter Three-Coin Set was the most popular, hands down. The US Mint launched it on Tuesday, September 20, and by Monday, September 26, collectors purchased 10,891 of them. Its debut was slightly better than the previous issue, featuring the Glacier Quarters, which opened with 10,620 in a similar time frame.

Debut sales for the numismatic Gettysburg National Military Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin hit 9,549, or 27% of its maximum mintage of 35,000 between its release on Thursday, September 22, and Monday. The figure came in low compared to prior releases in the series in large part due to the falling price of silver on the precious metals market. In fact, silver's price was so volatile that the US Mint suspended it and other silver products on Monday.

The Hayes Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set also launched on Thursday, and debut sales showed 1,448 sold by Monday. It was a slow start for the third 2011 set in the Presidential series, since Grant's coin and medal set debut sales were 1,569 in July, and Johnson's set started with 2,362 when it was released in May.

Demand for bullion Silver Eagles skyrocketed over the last eight days. 2,596,000 were purchased, which moved the September total up to 4,000,500. That guaranteed it a spot in the top three all-time highest monthly totals since the coin's inception in 1986.

The one ounce American Gold Eagles picked up 54,500 versus 6,000 in the last report, and the American Buffalo was the next largest gainer with 7,500.
