US Mint Sales: Grand Canyon Quarters Debut, Gold Fractional Coins Rise

US Mint Coin Sales ReportThe first round of sales figures for Grand Canyon National Park Quarters are available and prove to be favorable. With that launch, the United States Mint experienced another flux of coin sales, as demand rose for numismatic products. Everything except First Spouse coins jumped, while bullion coin sales remained mixed.

The newest America the Beautiful Quarter hit the streets on Monday, September 20, along with bags and rolls from the Mint. Compared to the prior inaugural Yosemite, Yellowstone and Hot Springs quarter figures, the 100-coin bags and two-roll sets are moving just a tad bit slower, with Hot Springs's coin starting out the best. The following table shows this year's debuting quarter sales:

Hot Springs, Yellowstone, and Yosemite quarters spiked with the release of the Grand Canyon 25-cent piece, but one Yosemite product went the wrong direction. Yosemite's Two-Roll Sets fell -5,460 compared to its previous 6,819 gain. Perhaps a Mint accounting correction. Yellowstone's Sets increased by 555 versus 309 in the prior week, and Hot Springs's Sets rose 450 compared to 223. Sales of 100-coin bags also improved.

Just when demand for coin sets seemed high, it went higher. 5,754 of the America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set sold, but they were not the highest. 39,348 of the 2010 United States Mint Proof Sets were scooped up by collectors. Their prior increase had been 31,781. The second best seller was the 2010 Silver Proof Set, in which buyers took 22,244 versus 19,828. Also selling strong was the 2010 Mint Uncirculated Set with 14,210 more sold.

Buchanan's Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set debuted on September 23. Initial sales started at 2,080, which was much higher than Pierce's version at 1,340. The prior Fillmore set opened at 2,362.

Proof Disabled American Veterans commemorative coins took an exceptional leap. 4,627 were sent out. 3,634 were proofs and 993 were uncirculated, following 2,173 and 477 leaving store shelves the prior week.

Skyrocketing attention to gold prices and gold coins may have helped the proof American Buffalo coins but not the First Spouse Gold Coins. 6 out of 8 available spouse options were down. James Buchanan's proof Liberty coin did the best by improving by 420, but that was 187 less than the gain in the prior round. Margaret Taylor's proof and uncirculated were the only two to exceed previous gains.

24-karat proof American Buffalo rose 1,755, up from the previous 1,301. They may continue to outperform week over week since the bullion Buffalo coins sold out. (Last year, the bullion Buffalo was available until December 4, 2009.) But the proof's price may pressure future sales as well. They are going for $1,560 -- their highest price ever. With the direction the gold market has been going, it does not look like prices will be falling any time soon.

In other bullion news, one ounce Gold Eagles advanced 24,500 in one week's time. The smaller gold fractional coins climbed, with the exception of the 1/2 ounce size which stayed quiet. The 1/4 ounce Gold Eagle jumped ahead by 2,000 coins and 1/10 ounce Gold Eagle moved ahead 15,000 after being silent for several weeks.

Demand remained high for American Silver Eagle bullion. Another 835,000 were purchased as the month winded down. Tomorrow is critical, however, because September could end up being the slowest month of 2010 since total sales are under 2 million.

The next numismatic products to hit the charts will be the James Buchanan $1 Coin Cover on September 30 and the highly anticipated 2010 American Gold Eagle Proofs on October 7.

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly U.S. Mint coin sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest sales totals as of Sunday, September 26, 2010. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, September 29.
