Record high gold prices has increased the demand for bullion coins, and the first ones to see an early departure from U.S. Mint store shelves are the one-ounce 2010 American Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins.
The coins officially sold out, with the Mint telling buyers its inventory was depleted and that no more would be produced or sold this year.
The 24 karat, .9999 fine bullion coins have been issued yearly since 2006. As it turns out, that year recorded the best annual sales at above 320,000. The 2010 Gold Buffalo comes in second place. They launched on April 29, 2010, and U.S. Mint authorized purchasers grabbed 209,000 in under five months.
There is no information as to when the 2011-dated Buffalo coins will become available, as details are still being worked out.
"We are still trying to finalize plans for release of the 2011 American Buffalo gold one-ounce bullion," Tom Jurkowsky, Mint director of public affairs told Kitco News.
Buyers can still purchase the 2010 American Gold Buffalo Proof coin, which is produced specifically for collectors. The coins are currently priced at $1,560 each and are available directly from the Mint (http://catalog.usmint.gov/).
In the gold bullion realm, the American Gold Eagles are the sole remaining 2010 Mint products available. The one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce sizes are available through the Mint's network of authorized buyers, coin dealers and precious metals sellers. The collector one-ounce 2010 Gold Eagle Proof will be available October 7, 2010. These will be sold directly by the Mint.
For silver bullion, the Mint still has plenty of American Silver Eagles. Sales of the coins have been on fire, especially in the last week as silver prices have reached 30-year highs. The Mint has already sold nearly 25.3 million of the coins this year. 2009 was a record year with 28.7 million in sales. That number should be shattered this year.
Additionally, the bullion 2010 America the Beautiful Silver coins will be available in the coming months as well. These 5-ounce, 3-inch diameter coins will feature the same designs as the America the Beautiful Quarters™. Five will be issued this year honoring Hot Springs National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon National Park and Mt. Hood National Forest.
