Annual collector sets, once again, shined the brightest among all of the United States Mint numismatic products, which were mostly sluggish for a second week. Only five items squeezed in an increase over prior sales. Demand for bullion coins picked up slightly.
According to the latest US Mint sales figures, the 2010 Proof Set leaped the highest with a gain of 27,670. Next was the 2010 Uncirculated Mint Set, adding 13,819. Still, neither sets came close to the advances they had in the last round, when they climbed 43,120 and 25,800, respectively.
The five offerings that managed to grow more were the proof Disabled American Veterans dollar, the Philadelphia minted 100-coin bag of Yellowstone park quarters, Polk's Presidential dollar 25-coin roll set from Philadelphia, James and Sarah Polk's Presidential Coin & First Spouse medal set, and the Harrison's Presidential $1 coin cover.
Bullion coin sales saw more action except for the half-ounce American Gold Eagles, which remained at zero for the month. The one ounce gold coins advanced the most — 22,500. The quarter-ounce gained 2,000 and the tenth-ounce surged by 10,000. The 24-karat American Buffalo bullion coins were a little slower, growing just another 2,500. Silver was the hottest of them all, though. The Silver Eagles jumped 245,000.
Two new products are coming to the Mint's line up next week. 2010 Grand Canyon National Park Quarter rolls and bags will go on sale on September 20. James Buchanan's Presidential $1 Coin and First Spouse Medal Set is coming a few days later on September 23. (In recent news from the Mint, 2010 Proof Gold Eagle coins will launch October 7, 2010.)
The first three columns of the table below provide weekly U.S. Mint coin sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest sales totals as of Sunday, September 12, 2010. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Thursday, September 16.
