Gold took center stage in the latest round of United States Mint sales figures. Five 2010-W Proof American Gold Eagle products debuted for the first time since 2008, and collectors were apparently pleased. The new items, however, did not help other areas of the Mint's portfolio. Collector sets were down, as were bags and rolls of quarters and dollars. The bullion market picked up a bit for gold, while silver coin sales remained steady.
The first round for the 22 karat Gold Eagles proved interesting since prices were so high compared to past years. Nearly 14,000 one ounce coins sold between Thursday afternoon and Sunday, which is more than half of the product limit for the individual coin.
Once the individual coin sells out, the only way to get a one ounce 2010-W would be through the four-coin set. It looks as if the set will take longer to reach its limit. Just over 7,000 sold, even though the price tag was $2,938. The half ounce and the quarter ounce individual proofs each sold over 2,000 while the one tenth ounce sold almost 7,000.
24 karat Gold Buffalo proofs slowed for the second straight week despite the bullion version selling out. Their gains were 1,164 versus 1,459 in the previous round. Even the 24 karat half ounce First Spouse coins dipped, advancing by 683 overall compared to 868.
Bullion American Gold Eagles saw some action during their counterparts' debut. The one ounce coins climbed another 27,000 in one week, and the tenth ounce added 15,000 after being silent last week. The only other fractional gold to gain was the half ounce. It advanced by 3,000 coins.
The silver bullion eagle "September Slow Down" is over as the Mint's authorized purchasers picked up 509,000 over the week. The addition was similar to the previous week's gain of 515,000. Together, October's total moved up to 1,225,000 and their year-to-date hit 26,705,500. If sales trends remain constant around 500,000 a week, the 2010 silver eagle total will blow past the 2009 record breaking total during the second week of November.
Demand for the top-selling Mint Sets and Silver Sets cooled in this round, despite higher intrinsic silver coin values for the latter. The 2010 Proof Set rose 31,725 after propelling 43,779. The Silver Proof Set was next, increasing by 13,766 compared to 19,097 and the Mint Uncirculated Set jumped 10,073 versus 14,690 previously. The only set to outperform its prior gain was the 2009 DC/Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set. It surged 1,070 compared to 845.
