Old Junk Silver Coin Values Jump

Old Silver CoinsWith silver prices rallying to levels that have not been seen in 30 years, interest in United States coins that circulated in 1964 and before has skyrocketed. Many of them include silver, and those that do are worth far more than their face values.

Bags and rolls of these "junk silver coins" have become hot items, and harder to find.

Junk silver coins, a term often used to describe older coins that have no real worth to collectors but contain 90% silver, have intrinsic values that have soared ...

US Mint Launches Grand Canyon National Park Quarter in Ceremony

The United States Mint today, with help from National Park Service officials, marked the release of the Grand Canyon National Park quarter.

Grand Canyon National Park Quarter Grand Canyon National Park Quarter

Highlights of the event included a ceremonial coin pour, performances by the Pollen Trail Dancers, a local Native American troupe, and a coin exchange at which members of the public swapped their currency for $10 rolls of the new quarter.

Children 18 years old and younger received a new Grand Canyon National Park quarter to commemorate the event.

"The United States Mint is honored to be connecting America to its most significant natural treasures through the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program," said United States Mint Director Ed Moy.  "The new Grand Canyon National Park quarter design echoes the ancient grandeur of this wondrous place."

The design on the coin's reverse (tails side) features a view of the granaries above the Nankoweap Delta in Marble Canyon near the Colorado River, which were used for storing food and seeds.  Inscriptions on the reverse are GRAND CANYON, ARIZONA, 2010and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

The design on the coin's obverse (heads side) features the 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original model.  Inscriptions on the obverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.

"The introduction of a Grand Canyon quarter is a momentous occasion in the human story of the park; so we were thrilled when the Nankoweap granaries were chosen as the design for the reverse side," said Steve Martin, Superintendent of Grand Canyon National Park.  "The use of the granaries really seems to connect the coin and today's event to the thousands of years of human history reflected in archeological sites throughout the canyon."

The Grand Canyon National Park quarter is the fourth coin released through the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program, a multi-year initiative to honor 56 national parks and other sites in each state, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories.

Each year through 2020, the United States Mint will issue five new quarters in the order in which the honored site was first established as a national site.  One final coin will be released in 2021.

The United States Mint began offering 100-coin bags and two-roll sets containing the new Grand Canyon National Park quarter on September 20.  Collectors may order these products at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog or at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).  Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order by calling 1-888-321-MINT (6468).

Additional information about other America the Beautiful Quarters Program product options, including subscriptions, is also available.

Free lesson plans based on the America the Beautiful Quarters Program are available at the United States Mint's Web site.  Created and reviewed by teachers to meet national curricular standards, the plans draw on the new reverse designs to inspire students to learn about the culture, geography, unique heritage and natural beauty of our national parks and other national sites.  For more information about America the Beautiful Quarters Program educational resources, visit:  http://www.usmint.gov/kids/teachers/.

The Grand Canyon was first established as a national site on February 20, 1893.  A powerful and inspiring landscape, the Grand Canyon overwhelms our senses through its immense size - 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide and a mile deep.

Although first afforded Federal protection in 1893 as a forest reserve and later as a national monument, the Grand Canyon did not achieve national park status until 1919, three years after the creation of the National Park Service.  Today Grand Canyon National Park receives close to five million visitors every year - a far cry from the 44,173 visitors the park received in 1919.

The United States Mint, created by Congress in 1792, is the Nation's sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage.  Its primary mission is to produce an adequate volume of circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce.  The United States Mint also produces proof, uncirculated and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; and silver, gold and platinum bullion coins.

Breener’s Lincoln Portrait on One-Cent Coin

The Lincoln cent proved to be so popular, and the portrait so moving, that the obverse is still going strong a century after its introduction. Instead of the original wheat ears reverse or the Lincoln Memorial design that replaced it in 1959, there are new reverse designs marking the centennial of the Lincoln cent and the Lincoln Bicentennial...

2011 Medal of Honor Gold and Silver Coin Designs

United States Mint Deputy Director Andy Brunhart unveiled designs for the 2011 Medal of Honor Commemorative Coin Program today at the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's annual convention in historic Charleston, S.C.

The bureau is minting and issuing the commemorative coins in recognition and celebration of the establishment of the Medal of Honor in 1861, as authorized by Public Law 111-91, the Medal of Honor Commemorative Coin Act of 2009.

Options will include gold $5 coins and silver $1 coins in proof and uncirculated qualities.

The obverse (heads side) of the gold coin, by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna, depicts the original Medal of Honor, authorized by Congress in 1861, as the Navy's highest personal decoration.

Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY, 1861,2011, IN GOD WE TRUST and MEDAL OF HONOR.

The coin's reverse (tails side) was designed by Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Master Designer Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso.

The design features Minerva, based on the common central image on both the original Navy and Army Medals of Honor. Minerva, standing with a shield representing the Army and Navy in her right hand and the Union flag in her left hand, is flanked by a field artillery cannon and wheel of the Civil War era. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, $5 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

The obverse of the silver coin, by Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz, depicts the three current Army, Navy and Air Force Medals of Honor, left to right.

The ribbon with field of stars in the center is the common feature of all three medals, reflecting the joint nature of modern era warfare and that the Medal of Honor is the only U.S. military medal worn around the neck. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST,MEDAL OF HONOR and 1861–2011.

The coin's reverse was designed by AIP Master Designer Richard Masters and sculpted by Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill. The design depicts a modern-day infantry soldier carrying a wounded soldier to safety under enemy fire, reflecting the courage and self-sacrifice of all Medal of Honor recipients.

Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

Mintages for the Medal of Honor Commemorative Coin Program are limited to 100,000 gold $5 coins and 500,000 silver $1 coins. Surcharges collected from coin sales—$35 for each gold coin and $10 for each silver coin—are authorized to be paid to the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation to help finance its educational, scholarship and outreach programs.

The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force that can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. It is presented to a person who distinguishes himself or herself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty. The medals are presented by the President in the name of Congress.

"The men and women of the United States Mint are honored by the role we will play in connecting America to the values and qualities of courage, sacrifice and patriotism through the 2011 Medal of Honor Commemorative $5 Gold and Silver Dollar Coins," said Deputy Director Brunhart.

2010 Silver Eagle Rationing Ends

The US Mint took a giant leap towards fulfilling the dreams of many collectors this past week when it quietly announced an end to the rationing of the bullion American Silver Eagles.

What this means for collectors is a slight increase in the chance that the Mint might be able to strike the 2010 Proof American Silver Eagles this year after all.  Readers will recall that testimony earlier this summer from Mint Director Ed Moy indicated that in order to insure their release, Congress would have to act...

2010 Platinum Eagle Prices Rise

2010 American Eagle One Ounce Platinum Proof CoinThe 2010 Proof Platinum Eagle coin was released from the United States Mint nearly two months ago to this day, on August 12, 2010.

Like its immediate 2009 predecessor, collectors quickly snapped up the allotted mintage.

In fact, both coins were available for barely more than a week before new orders were placed on a standby only list — processed only if an older order was canceled. The official 2010 Platinum Eagle sold out notice was declared August 23, 2010.

Those quick sell-outs were not terribly surprising given their surrounding conditions. First, collectors were funneled towards...

Pennies and Nickels – The Mint Should Stop Making Them

Now, I have heard arguments to abolish the US cent and nickel, but video blogger John Green took his rant to the next level.

US Mint Sales: Grand Canyon Quarters Debut, Gold Fractional Coins Rise

US Mint Coin Sales ReportThe first round of sales figures for Grand Canyon National Park Quarters are available and prove to be favorable. With that launch, the United States Mint experienced another flux of coin sales, as demand rose for numismatic products. Everything except First Spouse coins jumped, while bullion coin sales remained mixed.

The newest America the Beautiful Quarter hit the streets on Monday, September 20, along with bags and rolls from the Mint. Compared to the prior inaugural Yosemite, Yellowstone and Hot Springs quarter figures, the 100-coin bags and two-roll sets are moving just a tad bit slower, with Hot Springs's coin starting out the best. The following table shows this year's debuting quarter sales:

Hot Springs, Yellowstone, and Yosemite quarters spiked with the release of the Grand Canyon 25-cent piece, but one Yosemite product went the wrong direction. Yosemite's Two-Roll Sets fell -5,460 compared to its previous 6,819 gain. Perhaps a Mint accounting correction. Yellowstone's Sets increased by 555 versus 309 in the prior week, and Hot Springs's Sets rose 450 compared to 223. Sales of 100-coin bags also improved.

Just when demand for coin sets seemed high, it went higher. 5,754 of the America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set sold, but they were not the highest. 39,348 of the 2010 United States Mint Proof Sets were scooped up by collectors. Their prior increase had been 31,781. The second best seller was the 2010 Silver Proof Set, in which buyers took 22,244 versus 19,828. Also selling strong was the 2010 Mint Uncirculated Set with 14,210 more sold.

Buchanan's Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set debuted on September 23. Initial sales started at 2,080, which was much higher than Pierce's version at 1,340. The prior Fillmore set opened at 2,362.

Proof Disabled American Veterans commemorative coins took an exceptional leap. 4,627 were sent out. 3,634 were proofs and 993 were uncirculated, following 2,173 and 477 leaving store shelves the prior week.

Skyrocketing attention to gold prices and gold coins may have helped the proof American Buffalo coins but not the First Spouse Gold Coins. 6 out of 8 available spouse options were down. James Buchanan's proof Liberty coin did the best by improving by 420, but that was 187 less than the gain in the prior round. Margaret Taylor's proof and uncirculated were the only two to exceed previous gains.

24-karat proof American Buffalo rose 1,755, up from the previous 1,301. They may continue to outperform week over week since the bullion Buffalo coins sold out. (Last year, the bullion Buffalo was available until December 4, 2009.) But the proof's price may pressure future sales as well. They are going for $1,560 -- their highest price ever. With the direction the gold market has been going, it does not look like prices will be falling any time soon.

In other bullion news, one ounce Gold Eagles advanced 24,500 in one week's time. The smaller gold fractional coins climbed, with the exception of the 1/2 ounce size which stayed quiet. The 1/4 ounce Gold Eagle jumped ahead by 2,000 coins and 1/10 ounce Gold Eagle moved ahead 15,000 after being silent for several weeks.

Demand remained high for American Silver Eagle bullion. Another 835,000 were purchased as the month winded down. Tomorrow is critical, however, because September could end up being the slowest month of 2010 since total sales are under 2 million.

The next numismatic products to hit the charts will be the James Buchanan $1 Coin Cover on September 30 and the highly anticipated 2010 American Gold Eagle Proofs on October 7.

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly U.S. Mint coin sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest sales totals as of Sunday, September 26, 2010. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, September 29. US Mint Sales: Annual Sets and Bullion Coins Gain

US Mint Coin Sales ReportAnnual collector sets, once again, shined the brightest among all of the United States Mint numismatic products, which were mostly sluggish for a second week. Only five items squeezed in an increase over prior sales. Demand for bullion coins picked up slightly.

According to the latest US Mint sales figures, the 2010 Proof Set leaped the highest with a gain of 27,670. Next was the 2010 Uncirculated Mint Set, adding 13,819. Still, neither sets came close to the advances they had in the last round, when they climbed 43,120 and 25,800, respectively.

The five offerings that managed to grow more were the proof Disabled American Veterans dollar, the Philadelphia minted 100-coin bag of Yellowstone park quarters, Polk's Presidential dollar 25-coin roll set from Philadelphia, James and Sarah Polk's Presidential Coin & First Spouse medal set, and the Harrison's Presidential $1 coin cover.

Bullion coin sales saw more action except for the half-ounce American Gold Eagles, which remained at zero for the month. The one ounce gold coins advanced the most — 22,500. The quarter-ounce gained 2,000 and the tenth-ounce surged by 10,000. The 24-karat American Buffalo bullion coins were a little slower, growing just another 2,500. Silver was the hottest of them all, though. The Silver Eagles jumped 245,000.

Two new products are coming to the Mint's line up next week. 2010 Grand Canyon National Park Quarter rolls and bags will go on sale on September 20. James Buchanan's Presidential $1 Coin and First Spouse Medal Set is coming a few days later on September 23. (In recent news from the Mint, 2010 Proof Gold Eagle coins will launch October 7, 2010.)

Coin Hoard of US Gold Double Eagles Discovered in London Garden

A valuable hoard of American gold coins has been unearthed in an east London garden — one of Britain's most curious treasure finds.

Buried hoards are discovered every so often, but their Anglo-Saxon, Viking or Roman owners were themselves interred long ago. Whoever hid the 80 coins from the 19th and early 20th centuries may be alive. Why they chose the garden of a residential block in Hackney is a mystery...

Two significant milestones were achieved last month. topped the 3 billion marker. And with pennies as the major contributor, 2010 coin production surpassed 5 billion coins. September also saw updated production figures for America the Beautiful Quarters™.

The U.S. Mint was less active in September, producing fewer circulating coins for a third straight month as levels fell toward those from May, according to the latest data...

U.S. Domestic Silver Production vs. US Mint $1 Silver Eagle Coin Sales

2010 American Silver Eagle Bullion CoinIn Title 31 of the US Code, the United States Mint is required by law to supply "in quantities sufficient to meet public demand, one dollar silver bullion coins of specified size, weight, and design."

This law is widely referenced, and I have criticized the US Mint in the past when it fails to meet consumer demand because of poor planning, despite the availability of silver.

However, there is an incredible amount of confusion about a second law which allegedly states that the US Mint must supply its silver "blanks" from domestic resources. At present, two of these resources are ...

US Mint Sales: 2010-W Proof Gold Eagle Coin Inaugural Sales

US Mint Coin Sales ReportGold took center stage in the latest round of United States Mint sales figures. Five 2010-W Proof American Gold Eagle products debuted for the first time since 2008, and collectors were apparently pleased. The new items, however, did not help other areas of the Mint's portfolio. Collector sets were down, as were bags and rolls of quarters and dollars. The bullion market picked up a bit for gold, while silver coin sales remained steady.

The first round for the 22 karat Gold Eagles proved interesting since prices were so high compared to past years. Nearly 14,000 one ounce coins sold between Thursday afternoon and Sunday, which is more than half of the product limit for the individual coin.

Once the individual coin sells out, the only way to get a one ounce 2010-W would be through the four-coin set. It looks as if the set will take longer to reach its limit. Just over 7,000 sold, even though the price tag was $2,938. The half ounce and the quarter ounce individual proofs each sold over 2,000 while the one tenth ounce sold almost 7,000.

24 karat Gold Buffalo proofs slowed for the second straight week despite the bullion version selling out. Their gains were 1,164 versus 1,459 in the previous round. Even the 24 karat half ounce First Spouse coins dipped, advancing by 683 overall compared to 868.

Bullion American Gold Eagles saw some action during their counterparts' debut. The one ounce coins climbed another 27,000 in one week, and the tenth ounce added 15,000 after being silent last week. The only other fractional gold to gain was the half ounce. It advanced by 3,000 coins.

The silver bullion eagle "September Slow Down" is over as the Mint's authorized purchasers picked up 509,000 over the week. The addition was similar to the previous week's gain of 515,000. Together, October's total moved up to 1,225,000 and their year-to-date hit 26,705,500. If sales trends remain constant around 500,000 a week, the 2010 silver eagle total will blow past the 2009 record breaking total during the second week of November.

Demand for the top-selling Mint Sets and Silver Sets cooled in this round, despite higher intrinsic silver coin values for the latter. The 2010 Proof Set rose 31,725 after propelling 43,779. The Silver Proof Set was next, increasing by 13,766 compared to 19,097 and the Mint Uncirculated Set jumped 10,073 versus 14,690 previously. The only set to outperform its prior gain was the 2009 DC/Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set. It surged 1,070 compared to 845.

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly U.S. Mint coin sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest sales totals as of Sunday, October 10, 2010. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Tuesday, October 12. In a press release published by CoinNews from the Royal Mint, Dave Knight, Director of Commemorative Coin, expressed his excitement for the new strikes:

"Every one of our twenty nine winners is making history. Their coins will become treasured mementos of the biggest sporting event to happen on UK shores in a generation, and will be around for generations to come.

The United States Mint is no longer rationing bullion 2010 American Silver Eagle coins thanks to easing demand, but that does not guarantee 2010-W Proof Silver Eagle production will kick off as happened under similar circumstances when bullion 2010 Gold Eagle sales slowed.

The U.S. Mint on September 3, 2010, told its authorized dealers that it will no longer allocate the bullion .999 fine silver coins, saying they could place orders "under the standard ordering procedures."...

Proof 2010 American Eagle Gold Coins

2010 Proof Gold Eagle

The United States Mint launched their Proof 2010 American Eagle Gold coins Thursday, October 7, 2010, at noon Eastern Time.

The 22 karat gold collector coins are priced according to the Mint's pricing schedule for numismatic gold products, which they have been using since early 2009. Collectors and gold enthusiasts who want the first strikes will have to shell out a hefty sum of money, as the table of introduction prices shows below:

American Eagle Gold Coin PricesFour Coin Set Proof Gold Eagles

In order for prices to go up or down, the London Fix weekly average price of an ounce of gold will have to move outside of the current range, which is between $1,300 and $1,349.99. Typically, the average is calculated every Wednesday, and if the Mint adjusts their prices, they normally do it by noon Eastern Time.

Last year, the Mint was not able to produce the collector proof eagles due to the high volume of orders for the bullion versions. Law requires the Mint to strike bullion coins in quantities to meet public demand, and there was not enough available blanks to produce both kinds in 2009.

A few months ago, however, demand for bullion Gold Eagles slowed, leaving time and available gold coin blanks. In fact, production kicked off by early September, with the official press release announcing the eagles revealing their limited mintages. The chart shown below illustrates:

Orders can be placed by going to the United States Mint's Web site (http://catalog.usmint.gov/) or by calling their toll-free number, 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). There are no household limits in place, and no mail orders will be accepted due to possible price fluctuations.

The gold coins are shipped in a blue velvet and satin-lined presentation case. Each case will have a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Mint Director, Edmund Moy.

The proof quality of the polished coins means the sharp relief images will appear frosted on a mirror-like background. The obverse features the familiar full-length image of Liberty. The reverse design was created by sculptor Miley Frances Busiek and features a male eagle carrying an olive branch while flying above a nest with a female eagle and her eaglets.

Last Monday the Mint announced it will begin selling the 2010 Silver Eagle Proof coins on November 19, 2010 at 12 PM noon Eastern Time.

US Mint Sales: Buchanan $1 Covers Debut, Bullion Silver Eagles Near 26M

US Mint Coin Sales ReportCollectors continued to go for coin sets, as most of them and a few First Spouse coins pull ahead in the latest United States Mint sales report. In the bullion market, gold coin sales slowed for the most part while silver sales chugged onward.

September turned out to be the slowest month of the year so far for American Silver Eagle bullion coins. Less than 2 million were purchased — 1,880,000 was the total. Perhaps it was the fury about the Proof American Silver Eagles that caused sales to wane, or just the time of the year which typically slows and then picks right back up again in November and December.

As for October's start, authorized purchasers took 515,000 in the first five days. The year-to-date total crept up to 25,995,500 and remains 2,771,000 away from matching 2009's stellar silver record.

Bullion 22 karat American Gold Eagle one ounce coins added another 15,500 to their year-to-date total, bringing it to 898,500. The only fractional gold to climb was the 1/4 ounce. It advanced by 2,000 coins.

The James Buchanan $1 Coin Cover was one of the highlights of the week. It debuted on Thursday, September 30, and by Sunday, October 3, collectors swiftly removed 16,220 from the Mint's inventory. With that, the Buchanan Cover started slightly behind the Pierce Covers, which debuted on July 1 at 16,688. Still, Buchanan's product met half its maximum production limit of 32,000 units.

As mentioned in the opening, collector sets continued to demand attention, especially the 2010 Proof Set. An additional 43,779 sold, after 39,348 sold the prior week. This brought the total to 659,716. It marked the third week over week improvement.

The 2010 Mint Uncirculated Set tally leaped by 14,690, up from 14,210 previously. America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Sets also improved over the last week by gaining 6,611 compared to 5,754.

Proof Disabled American Veterans commemorative coins eased a bit but remained strong. 2,923 proofs and 921 uncirculated left Mint shelves, after 3,634 and 993 went in the last round.

In the 24-karat gold collector arena, proof American Buffalo coin demand dipped compared to the last report, but not by much. 1,459 coins old versus 1,755 previously, which meant last week's announcement that the bullion version sold out did not boost greater sales. As for First Spouse Gold Coins, 3 out of 8 available spouse options were improved, contributing to an overall gain of 22 more sold coins than the previous round.

Several new offerings that should debut strong in next week's report are the highly anticipated 2010 American Gold Eagle Proofs, hitting the market this week at noon ET on October 7. Although their prices will be high, the price of gold has formed a habit of setting new records for the year. And the lack of 2009 American Gold Eagle Proofs may drive demand. In addition, the Mint has already announced that the American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coins will not be available this year. The coin options that begin this week on Thursday are the proof one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, one-tenth ounce, and the four-coin set which contains one coin in each size. For more, check out "2010 Proof Gold Eagle Coin Issue Information" which was published last month.

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly U.S. Mint coin sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest sales totals as of Sunday, October 3, 2010. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Tuesday, October 5. Sacagawea Greatest US Mint Coin Error

In commemoration of the new book, the 100 Greatest U.S. Error Coins by David Camire, Nicholas Brown and legendary error dealer Fred Weinberg, we’ve decided to discuss the greatest error in United States history… the 2000 Sacagawea Mule.

Debuting in May of 2000, this slip up was destined to make history. At the time, it was the only known "mule" coin in United States history.

For those who are not professional numismatists, a mule is a pairing of two different coin designs on one coin — in this case, a State Quarter and the brand new Sacagawea dollar...

2010 American Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins Sell Out

2010 American Buffalo Gold bullion coin 2010 American Buffalo Gold bullion coin

Record high gold prices has increased the demand for bullion coins, and the first ones to see an early departure from U.S. Mint store shelves are the one-ounce 2010 American Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins.

The coins officially sold out, with the Mint telling buyers its inventory was depleted and that no more would be produced or sold this year.

The 24 karat, .9999 fine bullion coins have been issued yearly since 2006. As it turns out, that year recorded the best annual sales at above 320,000. The 2010 Gold Buffalo comes in second place. They launched on April 29, 2010, and U.S. Mint authorized purchasers grabbed 209,000 in under five months.

There is no information as to when the 2011-dated Buffalo coins will become available, as details are still being worked out.

"We are still trying to finalize plans for release of the 2011 American Buffalo gold one-ounce bullion," Tom Jurkowsky, Mint director of public affairs told Kitco News.

Buyers can still purchase the 2010 American Gold Buffalo Proof coin, which is produced specifically for collectors. The coins are currently priced at $1,560 each and are available directly from the Mint (http://catalog.usmint.gov/).

In the gold bullion realm, the American Gold Eagles are the sole remaining 2010 Mint products available. The one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce sizes are available through the Mint's network of authorized buyers, coin dealers and precious metals sellers. The collector one-ounce 2010 Gold Eagle Proof will be available October 7, 2010. These will be sold directly by the Mint.

For silver bullion, the Mint still has plenty of American Silver Eagles. Sales of the coins have been on fire, especially in the last week as silver prices have reached 30-year highs. The Mint has already sold nearly 25.3 million of the coins this year. 2009 was a record year with 28.7 million in sales. That number should be shattered this year.

Additionally, the bullion 2010 America the Beautiful Silver coins will be available in the coming months as well. These 5-ounce, 3-inch diameter coins will feature the same designs as the America the Beautiful Quarters™. Five will be issued this year honoring Hot Springs National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon National Park and Mt. Hood National Forest.

2010 Proof American Gold Eagle Opening Prices

2010 Proof Gold Eagle

Record high gold prices will be translating into higher priced numismatic gold coins, according to the United States Mint coin pricing policy.

Around Wednesday mid-morning, expect the U.S. Mint to have set the opening prices for the 2010 Proof Gold Eagle coins, raised the prices of all its First Spouse Gold Coins, and increased the cost of the 2010 Proof Gold Buffalo.

Why? Because the primary factor for how much the Mint charges for its collector gold coins is based on the trending price of gold itself.

The Mint uses the London Fix weekly gold average (prior Thursday AM to current Wednesday AM) to help set prices. That average has moved up to a new gold coin pricing level, between $1,300 and $1,349.99 an ounce. As such, and unless gold miraculously drops to below $1,170 an ounce tomorrow:

Uncirculated First Spouse Coins will be increased from $791 to $816,Proof First Spouse Gold Coins will move from $804 to $829, and2010 Proof AMerican Buffalo Gold coins will go from $1560 to $1610

Additionally, the 2010 Proof American Gold Eagle coins, which go on sale Thursday at noon Eastern Time, will have opening prices of:

The last time the Mint raised prices on its collector gold coins was on September 15, 2010. Then, the weekly gold average had moved within $1,250.00 and $1,299.99 an ounce.

2009 quarters silver set: bargains can’t last

Rapidly rising bullion prices are hard to keep up with.

2010 Gold Buffalo Bullion Coin Inventories Depleted

Even though its only September, US Mint sales of the 2010 American Gold Buffalo bullion coins are done for the year. Availability for the one ounce 24 karat gold bullion coin has become erratic in recent years, with the coins only available for a few months at a time, rather than throughout the year.

A memorandum sent to the US Mint’s authorized purchaser network included the following brief statement: The United States Mint has depleted its inventory of 2010 American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Bullion Coins. No additional inventory will be made available.

The 2010 Gold Buffalo bullion coins originally went on sale April 29, 2010. After just under five months of availability, the US Mint recorded sales of 209,000 coins.

The American Gold Buffalo series was introduced in 2006, in part to compete with the 24 karat gold offerings of other world mints. The US Mint’s popular American Gold Eagle is struck in a composition of 22 karat gold.

The 2006 Gold Buffalo was launched on June 22, 2006 and the coins were available throughout the remainder of the year. In 2007, the coins were available all year, although sales levels took a dip from the strong levels of the inaugural year. The following year, the more erratic availability would begin.

In September 2008, the US Mint announced their inventory of Gold Buffalo bullion coins depleted. The offering remained unavailable for more than a month. In November sales briefly resumed to sell one last batch of 25,000 coins. After that point, Gold Buffalo bullion coins were not available again for nearly a year.

The 2009 Gold Buffalo coins finally went on sale October 15, 2009 and only lasted until December 4, 2009 before inventories were depleted.

Will we ever see a return to normalcy when bullion coins are available throughout the year and not subject to depletion, suspensions, and rationing?

2010 Proof Silver Eagles to Fly November 19

The United States Mint has announced that the 2010 Proof Silver Eagle will be available for collectors this year. The news comes one month after the official conclusion of the US Mint’s long running rationing program, which had been in place due to high demand for bullion coins.

By law, the US Mint is required to produce American Gold and Silver Eagle bullion coins in quantities sufficient to meet public demand. Following their legal team’s interpretation, in times when bullion demand has exceeded planchet supply, the US Mint has sourced all incoming planchets to the production of bullion coins and foregone the production of collector coins.

This interpretation of their legal responsibilities led to the cancellation of the 2009 Proof Silver Eagle and the lengthy delay and uncertainty surrounding this year’s offering.

The 2010 Proof Silver Eagles will be available for ordering on November 19, with fulfillment of orders beginning on December 1. Pricing has been established at $45.95 per coin. This represents a hefty increase from the last available proof Silver Eagles, which were priced at $31.95 back in 2008. A household ordering limit has been established at 100 units.

The US Mint is not saying just how many coins will be available for collectors, as it will remain contingent on the level of bullion coin demand. If precious metals investors manage to tone it down for a few months, just how many 2010 Proof Silver Eagles will be produced?

A possible clue lies in the US Mint’s original request to Congress when they were attempting to amend the law to allow proof coins to be struck even while bullion demand remained unmet. They had requested authority to use up to 2 million incoming planchets to strike Proof Silver Eagles each year. This would top the highest mintage for a proof issue of the series, currently held by the 1986 Proof Silver Eagle with a final mintage of 1,446,778. The legislation eventually introduced in Congress left the determination up to the Secretary of the Treasury.
