US Mint Sales: Silver Proof Set Doubles Gain, Silver Eagles Cross 24.6M

US Mint Coin Sales ReportAlthough United States Mint coin sales slumped in the prior report, the latest round of numbers showed a reversal. In fact, demand for numismatic products improved across nearly every product, minus only eight items. Silver and some gold bullion also gained.

Coin sets again dramatically stood out the most in the latest sales figures. All of the proof sets were higher. The brilliant gem of the group was the 2010 Proof Set. The previous weekly increase had been 27,670, but in this round it was 31,781. The next highest seller was the silver version. The 2010 Silver Proof Set leaped 19,828 versus 8,949 in the prior report.

Individual coins also had some stand-outs. The proof Disabled American Veterans dollar skyrocketed by 2,173 and 2010 Proof Buffalo gold coins nearly doubled when they added 1,301 compared to 678 last time. And finally, 7 out of 8 First Spouse gold coins outperformed previous gains.

The best selling bullion coins were the American Silver Eagles, of course, but one ounce Gold Eagles also surged. The silvers jumped 655,000 compared to 245,000 before and moved their year-to-date total to 24,645,500, while the gold added another 25,500 after doing 22,500 in the prior week. The smaller sized Gold Eagles did not move. The 24-karat American Buffalo bullion coins, however, doubled their prior sales. They advanced 5,000 after growing 2,500 previously.

[Speaking of bullion eagle coins, U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg introduced Palladium Eagle legislation on Wednesday that would, if it became law, authorize the Mint to produced bullion, proof and uncirculated American Eagle Palladium coins. The bill is entitled the American Eagle Palladium Bullion Coin Act of 2010 and is awaiting action in the House Committee on Financial Services.]

The first three columns of the table below provide weekly U.S. Mint coin sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest sales totals as of Sunday, September 19, 2010. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, September 22.
