US Mint Sales: Bullion Coins Erupt, Top Selling 2010 Proof Set Slows

US Mint Coin Sales ReportDemand for collector sets were mixed in the latest round of US Mint sales data. The 2010 Proof Set slowed for the second week in a row, but bullion coins retained their hot pace.

The 2010 Proof Set total rose by 30,183 to hit 873,770, but weekly sales had been 38,709 and 51,016. The 2010 Silver Proof Set, on the other hand, outperformed two prior weeks' climbs by advancing 10,416 compared to 10,154 and 10,343. The 2010 Mint Set also exceeded. Its sales total improved by 8,556 versus 8,074 and 8,490.

Soaring in this round were 2010 American Gold Eagle proof coins. Collectors picked up 3,878 individual coins plus 5,233 Four-Coin Sets. The one-ounce individual Eagle sold out already, and the Four-Coin Set might be next, with 58 percent of the maximum 39,000 already sold. The one-tenth ounce individual Eagle ended the week with a gain of 1,622, which meant an accumulated total of 44 percent of its allowed mintage has been scooped up.

In the previous US Mint sales report, several products' totals retreated, possibly due to returns, order cancellations, and/or audits. This time only one numismatic item lost sales. The 2009 DC/Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set, which enjoyed a few bursts before it was removed from the Mint's line-up recently. It fell by -1,108, bringing its new total rolled down to 299,151.

November has been a good month for bullion coins in the Mint's eyes. American Silver Eagle bullion coins surged by 1,125,000 and pushed their monthly total to 2,715,000. If the momentum continues, they will surpass October's 3,150,000 tally later this week.

American Gold Eagle bullion coin sales were mixed. The one-ounce version leaped 17,500 and the one-half ounce grew by 3,000. The one-fourth ounce and the one-tenth ounce totals remained unchanged.
