The latest US Mint sales data showed mixed results. Several items exceeded their prior weekly gains, especially collector sets, while all proof gold coins cooled off.
Starting with bullion, Silver Eagle coins added another 600,000 to its October total, pushing it to 2.6 million. Now its sales rank 6th-best compared to other months in 2010. Year-to-date numbers topped 28 million.
For bullion Gold Eagles, the one ounce versions jumped 26,500 since last Wednesday, up from a 22,000 gain, and the quarter-ounce coins finally came on the board with an order of 2,000.
Numismatic 24-karat gold coins did not fare as well. The Buffalo Proofs rose by 485, after increasing 944 in the previous round, and the First Spouse gold coins only netted 54 sales in all, compared to 539. The Buchanan Liberty First Spouse coins were trimmed the most. Its proofs climbed by 7 versus 100, and its uncirculated fell back by -29 following an advance of 69.
As for the 22-karat 2010 Proof American Gold Eagles, a slow down after their second full week since their launch was expected. The one ounce version, however, climbed another 2,107 so its total hit 21,302. This meant it reached 85.2 percent of its product limit of 25,000. The other coins hummed along but did not accumulate as many sales. The Four-Coin Set added 1,432, the tenth-ounce grew by 644, and the quarter-ounce by 311.
That leaves the winners in the numismatic category to the sets. The 2010 Proof Set held on to the top spot because it catapulted by 40,006. That was an impressive rise after gaining 22,415 in the prior period. The second most beloved was the 2010 Silver Proof Set, which was propelled 14,147. Next week its total should hit the 400,000 milestone. Rounding out the top three was the 2010 Mint Set with 10,361.
