US Mint 2010 Last Opportunity Coins

Last Opportunity Coins

The U.S. Mint today added several 2010 Last Opportunity Coins and products to its online store, with three key ending dates of Dec. 2, Dec. 13, and Dec. 30, 2010. The coins that will no longer be available range from gold to silver to clad.

The United States Mint introduced the last chance sale back in November 2008 as an opportunity " to clear its shelves and offer several coins, coin sets, bags and rolls for the last time to customers." Since then it has been a semi frequent event.

Barring a prior sell out, products that will no longer be available by date breakouts follow:

Uncirculated and proof Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold coin sales will end on Dec. 2. The one-half ounce 24 karat gold pieces went on sale Dec. 3, 2009. Their mintage limits were set at a combined 40,000, but actual sales have been far short of the level. Less than 8,000 (3,313 uncirculated and 4,600 proof) have sold according to U.S. Mint sales figures as of Oct. 24, 2010.

The coin's obverse portrait of Margaret Taylor was designed by Phebe Hemphill and sculpted by Charles L. Vickers. The reverse depicts Taylor helping an injured soldier during the Seminole War. It was designed by Mary Beth Zeitz and sculpted by Jim Licaretz.

While their price points can change weekly based on gold trends, the proof is currently listed for $829 while the uncirculated is $13 less at $816.

The coins will go off sale at the same time that Mary Todd Lincoln First Spouse Gold Coins go on sale.

Dec. 3 will mark the end for 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollars which honor disabled vets of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The obverse features an image of legs and boots of three veterans and "pays tribute to the service and sacrifice" of disabled veterans. It was both designed and sculpted by Don Everhart. The reverse, designed by Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by Joseph Mena, features a forget-me-not flower at the base of a wreath wrapped in a ribbon that cradles and supports clusters of oak branches.

The proof silver dollar is priced at $43.95. The uncirculated silver dollar has a price of $25.95. Respective sales figures as of Oct. 24 for each are 172,894 and 71,136.

Three products will go off sale on Dec. 30. The biggest of the three is the 2009 D.C. & U.S. Territories Quarters Proof Set.

The set has been on sale longer than any other U.S. Mint product, having been launched on Jan. 5, 2009. The six proof coins in the set honor the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories -- the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

The set is priced at $14.95. Its latest sales stand at 623,610.

Finally, the last opportunity for two 2009-dated President and First Spouse Medal Sets will end. Each set includes an uncirculated Presidential $1 coin and a First Spouse Medal.

The Polk and Taylor sets have a price tag of $8.95. Their latest respective sales figure are 9,563 and 8,387.
