There were several ups and downs listed in the most recent U.S. Mint sales figures. Sets were mixed, but numismatic gold products were mostly up. Bullion gold and silver coins were hot.
The top selling sets did not exceed their prior gains. The 2010 Proof Set added 38,709 sales versus 51,016. The other sets fell modestly, with the 2010 Silver Proof Set up 10,154 compared to 10,343, and the 2010 Mint Set up 8,074 after 8,490 previously. The one set to rally was the Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Set. Its sales jumped by 5,804 versus 824 in the prior round.
Demand for proof gold coins picked up. Proof American Gold Eagles outperformed, especially the Four-Coin Set which surged ahead 4,639. The Proof Gold Buffalo coins went from 486 to 706, and the First Spouse gold coin sales tripled. The unique part about the First Spouse coins, however, was the fact that Buchanan's uncirculated Liberty had zero sales, Abigail Fillmore's uncirculated fell by -51, but Jane Pierce's Uncirculated erupted with 298 sales.
Fillmore's coins were not the only ones with retreating figures in this round. The John and Julia Tyler Presidential Dollar and First Spouse Medal Set was trimmed by -318 -- even though it is no longer on sale. And all three Grand Canyon Quarter products lost ground. The biggest loser was the James Buchanan's Presidential Coin Covers, which slid by a whopping -1,062.
Getting back to outperforming, the Disabled American Veteran silver commemoratives deserved recognition. Their combined sales doubled from 1,875 in the last round to 3,949 in this one. Most of the sales were for the proof silver dollars.
In the bullion arena, the Eagles took flight. Bullion Silver Eagle November sales are at 1,590,000 as of Wednesday, and their total so far for the year moved to 30,220,500. One ounce bullion Gold Eagles climbed to 31,500 for the month and 1,008,500 for the year. And the one-tenth ounce gold coins showed up on the charts this week with an increase of 5,000.
The first three columns of the table below provide weekly U.S. Mint coin sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest sales totals as of Sunday, November 7, 2010. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, November 10.
