US Mint Sales: Silver Eagles Top 28M, Spouse Gold Coins Sink
The latest US Mint sales data showed mixed results. Several items exceeded their prior weekly gains, especially collector sets, while all proof gold coins cooled off.
Starting with bullion, Silver Eagle coins added another 600,000 to its October total, pushing it to 2.6 million. Now its sales rank 6th-best compared to other months in 2010. Year-to-date numbers topped 28 million.
For bullion Gold Eagles, the one ounce versions jumped 26,500 since last Wednesday, up from a 22,000 gain, and the quarter-ounce coins finally came on the board with an order of 2,000.
Numismatic 24-karat gold coins did not fare as well. The Buffalo Proofs rose by 485, after increasing 944 in the previous round, and the First Spouse gold coins only netted 54 sales in all, compared to 539. The Buchanan Liberty First Spouse coins were trimmed the most. Its proofs climbed by 7 versus 100, and its uncirculated fell back by -29 following an advance of 69.
As for the 22-karat 2010 Proof American Gold Eagles, a slow down after their second full week since their launch was expected. The one ounce version, however, climbed another 2,107 so its total hit 21,302. This meant it reached 85.2 percent of its product limit of 25,000. The other coins hummed along but did not accumulate as many sales. The Four-Coin Set added 1,432, the tenth-ounce grew by 644, and the quarter-ounce by 311.
That leaves the winners in the numismatic category to the sets. The 2010 Proof Set held on to the top spot because it catapulted by 40,006. That was an impressive rise after gaining 22,415 in the prior period. The second most beloved was the 2010 Silver Proof Set, which was propelled 14,147. Next week its total should hit the 400,000 milestone. Rounding out the top three was the 2010 Mint Set with 10,361.

US Mint Sales: Silver Eagles Top 27M, Proof Gold Eagles at 74KUS Mint Coin Sales: Bullion Gold and Silver Eagles LeadTagged as: United States Mint, United States Mint StatsWill the US Mint Resume Silver Eagle Rationing?
During the course of the past several years, the United States Mint has implemented a rationing program for their popular American Silver Eagle bullion coins at times when demand has exceeded the available supply. Will a recent surge in demand for silver bullion cause them to reinstate the program?
The euphemistically titled "allocation program" was last implemented for Silver Eagles in December 2009. This followed a brief sales suspension during the last few days of November. At the time, the price of silver had been moving steadily higher, supporting increasing interest in precious metals investment. The US Mint experienced a slow month of silver bullion sales in September, followed by increasing demand in October and November leading up to the suspension and ensuing allocation program, which remained in place until this September.
During the past few months, the situation is shaping up to be eerily similar. In September 2010, the US Mint sold 1,880,000 ounces of silver bullion, which represented the lowest monthly sales of the year. In October, sales rebounded strongly to 3,150,000 ounces. For the current month date, sales have already exceeded this amount, measuring 3,175,000.
With the month a little more than half over, the total seems poised to set a new monthly sales record. The current record is 3,636,500 ounces achieved earlier this year in May. Annual sales are already in record territory.
Bullion sales have been rising against a backdrop of steadily rising silver prices. Since the end of September, the silver price has increased from $22.07 to $26.57, representing a gain of more than 20% in less than two months. Reports of tightening supplies or shortages for other silver bullion have also been reported. This may explain the recent move towards the higher premium bullion coins.
The American Silver Eagle is currently the only silver bullion product offered by the United States Mint. A second program known as the America the Beautiful Silver bullion coins has been scheduled to launch this year, but a release date has not yet been specified.

US Mint Sales: Five Coin Products Debut, Silver Eagle Proof Winner
Five new coin products launched and collectors eagerly responded -- especially for the 2010 Silver Eagle Proof, according to the most recent US Mint sales figures.
Buyers also gobbled up the US Mint proof sets a bit more than the prior week. Silver bullion was popular too, while gold bullion coin sales took the back seat.
The debuting products in top-selling order:
2010 Silver Eagle Proof Coins, 273,212 soldLincoln Presidential $1 Coin Rolls, 67,651 soldHot Springs National Park Quarter Three Coin Set, 10,684 soldMount Hood Quarter Bags & Rolls, 10,503 sold2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Circulating Coin Set, 5,684 soldIn terms of dollars spent, collectors shelled out more than $12.5 million for 2010 Silver Eagle Proof Coin and more than $2.4 million for Lincoln Presidential $1 Rolls. It was easily one of the best inaugural US Mint sales for both in recent years.
Mount Hood Quarter products started slow. Opening sales for previous 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters were more than 4,000 for each 100-coin bag and more than 23,000 for the Two-Roll Sets. Yet, Mount Hood started with 1,543 (P) 100-coin bags, 1,465 (D) 100-coin bags, and 7,495 Two-Roll Sets. In their defense, however, when the previous quarters launched, the Mint did not release four additional products during the same week.
Gold products were sluggish in this round. The number of 2010 Proof Buffalo coins sold was slashed by more than half, and the same went for the First Spouse gold coins. Even the 2010 Proof Gold Eagle coins could not repeat their previous week's gains. It should be noted, though, the Four-Coin Set hit 60 percent of its maximum.
As far as sets go, demand for the US Mint 2010 Proof Set strengthened. It gained 34,059 compared to 30,183 previously. The 2010 Silver Proof Set advanced 15,746 versus 10,416, and the 2010 Mint Set leaped by 12,097 after gaining 8,556 in the prior week.
US Mint Silver Eagle bullion coins continued to set new records. In one week's time, they surged by 1,160,000 and pushed their monthly total to 3,875,000 -- the highest for any month in 2010 AND since the series started in 1986. Year-to-date sales reached 32,505,500 and set a new record for the highest annual sales. In addition, the 2010 silver Eagles surpassed 2009's final mintage of 30,459,000 so it holds the new series record at 32,138,000.
The first three columns of the table below provide weekly U.S. Mint coin sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest sales totals as of Sunday, November 21, 2010. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Tuesday, November 23. The World’s Rarest Gold Collection—Sold!
The gold collection housed at the Carson Nugget in Carson City, Nevada was one of the two largest on display in the United States. It had been billed as the "world's rarest gold collection," and consisted of 170 specimens of gold in crystalline and nugget form with a combined weight of more than 300 ounces. The collection was originally put on display in the 1950's, when the casino opened.
The bulk of the collection was assembled in the 1930's by a California collector named John Ghririoso. It was purchased by Richard Graves for display at the Nevada casino and hotel called the Carson Nugget. When the casino was purchased by Howard and Hop Adams in 1957, the new owners continued to display and enhance the collection. Now, however, it will be going to a new home.
The collection, which has been valued at prices up to five million, was put on sale due to dwindling public interest. It simply has not been drawing the visitors that it once did. The current strength of the gold market made it an excellent time to reconsider the casino’s ownership, since the collection isn’t actually vital to its operations. The owners put the collection up for auction, setting the minimum bid at $1.1 million dollars.
The actual auction drew attention from more than 50 bidders. Their number was made up of public and private collectors, institutions, and dealers. It’s likely that the collection ended up with a collector, or perhaps and institution, but we don’t know for sure since the actual amount of the sale as well as the buyer’s identity is protected by a confidentiality agreement. Nor do we know at this time what the future of the celebrated collection might be. What we do know is that it is extremely valuable and unique, as these high quality specimens are no longer mined. Truly a once in a lifetime investment for one successful buyer.

Paper Money Collapses in Value as Gold and Silver Soar
Most people under the age of 50 have probably never seen government currency backed by a tangible asset such as silver. The $1 dollar Silver Certificates, last produced in 1963, were backed by silver on deposit in the US Treasury and payable in silver to "the bearer on demand".
The promise to redeem Silver Certificate dollars for silver was withdrawn by the US Government and holders of such dollars had to be satisfied that the value of their dollar was now backed by the "full faith and credit" of the US Government. Redemption of Silver Certificates for silver coin ended in 1964 and redemption of Silver Certificates for silver bullion was ended in 1968.
The era of currency backed by real money such as gold or silver ended and the dawn of a fiat currency system began. The result for holders of currency backed by nothing more than promises has been disastrous as the value of paper dollars has seen its purchasing power virtually disappear.
As the quantity of dollars has grown exponentially, their value has correspondingly diminished, leading to a large increase in general price levels.
Despite the obvious increase in prices and the collapse of the value of the dollar, the Federal Reserve tells us they now need to engage in money printing quantitative easing in order to create inflation to help the economy. Fed Chairman Bernanke ensures us that the Fed is committed to keeping inflation low.
"Although asset purchases are relatively unfamiliar as a tool of monetary policy, some concerns about this approach are overstated. Critics have, for example, worried that it will lead to excessive increases in the money supply and ultimately to significant increases in inflation. Our earlier use of this policy approach had little effect on the amount of currency in circulation or on other broad measures of the money supply, such as bank deposits. Nor did it result in higher inflation. We have made all necessary preparations, and we are confident that we have the tools to unwind these policies at the appropriate time. The Fed is committed to both parts of its dual mandate and will take all measures necessary to keep inflation low and stable."
The Fed has not succeeded at keeping inflation low in the past and now seems obsessed with inflating asset values to prop up a weak economy. It's all about trust with fiat money, and the Fed Chairman seems to be losing credibility.
The price movements in gold and silver are strong indicators that no one is being fooled by the Fed Chairman's words. Investors are watching "what they do - not what they say". Expect gold and silver prices to be dramatically higher over time, with an initial objective of $5,000/oz for gold.

US Mint Sales: Bullion Gold and Silvers Coins Jump
There were several ups and downs listed in the most recent U.S. Mint sales figures. Sets were mixed, but numismatic gold products were mostly up. Bullion gold and silver coins were hot.
The top selling sets did not exceed their prior gains. The 2010 Proof Set added 38,709 sales versus 51,016. The other sets fell modestly, with the 2010 Silver Proof Set up 10,154 compared to 10,343, and the 2010 Mint Set up 8,074 after 8,490 previously. The one set to rally was the Presidential Dollar Uncirculated Set. Its sales jumped by 5,804 versus 824 in the prior round.
Demand for proof gold coins picked up. Proof American Gold Eagles outperformed, especially the Four-Coin Set which surged ahead 4,639. The Proof Gold Buffalo coins went from 486 to 706, and the First Spouse gold coin sales tripled. The unique part about the First Spouse coins, however, was the fact that Buchanan's uncirculated Liberty had zero sales, Abigail Fillmore's uncirculated fell by -51, but Jane Pierce's Uncirculated erupted with 298 sales.
Fillmore's coins were not the only ones with retreating figures in this round. The John and Julia Tyler Presidential Dollar and First Spouse Medal Set was trimmed by -318 -- even though it is no longer on sale. And all three Grand Canyon Quarter products lost ground. The biggest loser was the James Buchanan's Presidential Coin Covers, which slid by a whopping -1,062.
Getting back to outperforming, the Disabled American Veteran silver commemoratives deserved recognition. Their combined sales doubled from 1,875 in the last round to 3,949 in this one. Most of the sales were for the proof silver dollars.
In the bullion arena, the Eagles took flight. Bullion Silver Eagle November sales are at 1,590,000 as of Wednesday, and their total so far for the year moved to 30,220,500. One ounce bullion Gold Eagles climbed to 31,500 for the month and 1,008,500 for the year. And the one-tenth ounce gold coins showed up on the charts this week with an increase of 5,000.
The first three columns of the table below provide weekly U.S. Mint coin sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest sales totals as of Sunday, November 7, 2010. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, November 10. US Mint Sales: Bullion Coins Erupt, Top Selling 2010 Proof Set Slows
Demand for collector sets were mixed in the latest round of US Mint sales data. The 2010 Proof Set slowed for the second week in a row, but bullion coins retained their hot pace.
The 2010 Proof Set total rose by 30,183 to hit 873,770, but weekly sales had been 38,709 and 51,016. The 2010 Silver Proof Set, on the other hand, outperformed two prior weeks' climbs by advancing 10,416 compared to 10,154 and 10,343. The 2010 Mint Set also exceeded. Its sales total improved by 8,556 versus 8,074 and 8,490.
Soaring in this round were 2010 American Gold Eagle proof coins. Collectors picked up 3,878 individual coins plus 5,233 Four-Coin Sets. The one-ounce individual Eagle sold out already, and the Four-Coin Set might be next, with 58 percent of the maximum 39,000 already sold. The one-tenth ounce individual Eagle ended the week with a gain of 1,622, which meant an accumulated total of 44 percent of its allowed mintage has been scooped up.
In the previous US Mint sales report, several products' totals retreated, possibly due to returns, order cancellations, and/or audits. This time only one numismatic item lost sales. The 2009 DC/Territories Quarters Silver Proof Set, which enjoyed a few bursts before it was removed from the Mint's line-up recently. It fell by -1,108, bringing its new total rolled down to 299,151.
November has been a good month for bullion coins in the Mint's eyes. American Silver Eagle bullion coins surged by 1,125,000 and pushed their monthly total to 2,715,000. If the momentum continues, they will surpass October's 3,150,000 tally later this week.
American Gold Eagle bullion coin sales were mixed. The one-ounce version leaped 17,500 and the one-half ounce grew by 3,000. The one-fourth ounce and the one-tenth ounce totals remained unchanged.
The first three columns of the table below provide weekly US Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. 1792 Half Disme Coin History
The obverse of the 1792 half disme portrays the head of “Liberty” facing left, with the date 1792 below. In 1844 John McAllister interviewed Adam Eckfeldt about the minting of these coins. Eckfeldt was the only surviving member of the mint who was presented when these coins were struck. He stated:
“These coins were struck expressly for Gen. Washington, in the extent of One Hundred Dollars, which sum he deposited in bullion or coin, for the purpose Mr. E. things that Gen. W. distributed them as presents. Some were sent to Europe but the greater number, he believes, were given to friends of Gen. W. in Virginia. No more of them were coined. They were never designated as currency. The Mint was not, at the time, fully ready to being put into operation.”

Getting 10 Times a Coin’s Face Value
The public and media have been keenly aware of rising bullion prices, with a particular focus on silver and its recent 30-year highs.
Silver often stands out as its the "poor man's gold." In other words, more people can easily afford several ounces of the metal versus the steeper price of owning even a single ounce gold.
Also, American coins struck before 1965 contain 90% silver, and it can be surprising how many people own more then a few of them. Often, many are old "junk silver coins," which means they are so worn that they have little to no extra value to collectors or numismatists. Still, they are worth a pretty penny to everyone because of their soaring melt values. And that fact has brought extra attention to old pocket change that may be sitting around at home.
A recent news segment on WSYR-TV in Syracuse recently posed the question: Want 10 times the face-value of your coins?
In it, Chris Fernandez, who is the owner of the Pawn King chain, is quoted as saying:
"Silver coins 1964 and older, quarters, dimes, half dollars, silver dollars... you're going to get 10x face value on them. So for 50-cents, you'll get five dollars," he said. "Most people don't realize that and they're pretty surprised when I tell them."
Depending on where silver is at in price, values can actually run substantially higher for pre-1965 junk silver coins.
For example, on November 8, 2010, silver was priced at $26.80 an ounce. At that time, a 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar had a melt value of $9.69 -- much more than 10x face value. One day later, silver soared as high as $29.34 an ounce, making that same 50-cent piece worth $10.61.
Of course, coin dealers and pawn shops will always pay less than the current going price for silver within old coins. They must make a profit to stay in business, and they must also take the risk -- especially during times when silver prices have jumped so quickly and have been volatile.
The above embedded video of the 9 WSYR-TV segment is the one referenced earlier in the article.

2010 Hot Springs National Park Quarter Three Coin Set on Sale
The 2010 Hot Springs National Park Quarter Three-Coin Set went on sale Wednesday, November 17, for a price of $13.95.
2010 Hot Springs National Park Quarter Three-Coin SetThe United States Mint release marks the first of these three-coin sets, with the debuting product featuring three different collectible versions of the Hot Springs National Park Quarter.
Included is a proof Hot Springs quarter minted in the San Francisco Mint and two uncirculated quarters, with one from the Denver Mint and the other from the Philadelphia Mint.
As collector coins, these quarters were handled with extra care, feature better qualities and have unique finishes. They are not the same as the circulating quarters found in everyday pocket change.
The three coins are held within an attractive plastic card which includes a brief description of Hot Springs National Park and the quarter design.
The reverse or tails side of the Hot Springs National Park Quarter depicts the headquarters building within the park and a fountain in the foreground. It was designed by Don Everhart and sculpted by Joseph Mena.
"Hot Springs National Park, destination of the Dunbar-Hunter Expedition sent by President Thomas Jefferson in 1804, features prehistoric American Indian quarries," notes the U.S. Mint website product page for the set. "A bustling town grew up around the hot springs to provide health services. Hot Springs was first established as a national site on April 20, 1832 (4 Stat. 505), to conserve the water from the 47 springs that emerge from Hot Springs Mountain and ensure that water was made available for drinking and therapy."
There will be five similar three-coin sets for every year until each America the Beautiful Quarter® is featured. That will take until 2021 given there are 56 national parks and other national sites selected to honor in the U.S. and its territories.
The 2010 Hot Springs Quarter Three-Coin Set may be ordered from the Mint website (http://www.usmint.gov), or by calling its toll free number 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).

US Mint 2010 Last Opportunity Coins
The U.S. Mint today added several 2010 Last Opportunity Coins and products to its online store, with three key ending dates of Dec. 2, Dec. 13, and Dec. 30, 2010. The coins that will no longer be available range from gold to silver to clad.
The United States Mint introduced the last chance sale back in November 2008 as an opportunity " to clear its shelves and offer several coins, coin sets, bags and rolls for the last time to customers." Since then it has been a semi frequent event.
Barring a prior sell out, products that will no longer be available by date breakouts follow:
Uncirculated and proof Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold coin sales will end on Dec. 2. The one-half ounce 24 karat gold pieces went on sale Dec. 3, 2009. Their mintage limits were set at a combined 40,000, but actual sales have been far short of the level. Less than 8,000 (3,313 uncirculated and 4,600 proof) have sold according to U.S. Mint sales figures as of Oct. 24, 2010.
The coin's obverse portrait of Margaret Taylor was designed by Phebe Hemphill and sculpted by Charles L. Vickers. The reverse depicts Taylor helping an injured soldier during the Seminole War. It was designed by Mary Beth Zeitz and sculpted by Jim Licaretz.
While their price points can change weekly based on gold trends, the proof is currently listed for $829 while the uncirculated is $13 less at $816.
The coins will go off sale at the same time that Mary Todd Lincoln First Spouse Gold Coins go on sale.
Dec. 3 will mark the end for 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollars which honor disabled vets of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The obverse features an image of legs and boots of three veterans and "pays tribute to the service and sacrifice" of disabled veterans. It was both designed and sculpted by Don Everhart. The reverse, designed by Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by Joseph Mena, features a forget-me-not flower at the base of a wreath wrapped in a ribbon that cradles and supports clusters of oak branches.
The proof silver dollar is priced at $43.95. The uncirculated silver dollar has a price of $25.95. Respective sales figures as of Oct. 24 for each are 172,894 and 71,136.
Three products will go off sale on Dec. 30. The biggest of the three is the 2009 D.C. & U.S. Territories Quarters Proof Set.
The set has been on sale longer than any other U.S. Mint product, having been launched on Jan. 5, 2009. The six proof coins in the set honor the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories -- the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The set is priced at $14.95. Its latest sales stand at 623,610.
Finally, the last opportunity for two 2009-dated President and First Spouse Medal Sets will end. Each set includes an uncirculated Presidential $1 coin and a First Spouse Medal.
The Polk and Taylor sets have a price tag of $8.95. Their latest respective sales figure are 9,563 and 8,387.

Circulating U.S. Silver Coin Melt Values
Melt values for old U.S. 90% silver coins have been soaring right along with the recent 30-year high silver prices. Silver rallied 9% last week, capping a 59% gain for the year.
With such increases, it is simple math to calculate how much silver bars, rounds or American Silver Eagles have increased in value. However, it is more challenging to determine how much old worn out coins composed of 90% silver are worth.
Specifically, we're talking about coins minted before 1965 that circulated in daily change and have little to no numismatic value due to their poor quality, lack of rarity, etc.
Take a look at how melt values for several old U.S. circulating coins have changed in recent years, to include their latest values based on an early Monday AM spot price of $26.80.

The above are all 90 percent silver coins. Taking wear and tear into the equation, which dealers will, $10 combinations of the coins calculate to about 7.15 ounces of silver. However, instead of doing the math, their are melt calculators on the Internet that do the work automatically. Two of them reside on Coin Collecting News partner sites at:
These melt calculators take the daily silver spot price, ask for the quantity of coins by type and then automatically calculate the intrinsic silver or melt values. They also provide a variable bid/ask price spread since a consumer buying from a dealer will pay more than spot price for silver coins while a dealer will pay less to acquire them.
Often, pre-1965 coins that offer little numismatic value may be purchased in rolls or bags. These bags can usually be found in face amounts ranging from $50 to $1,000.

If you picked the first, a 1794 silver dollar in very fine condition, with a pedigree going back to the Philip Strauss collection (Stack’s, 1959) at $1,350...

2010 Proof Gold Eagle Selling Quickly
Sales of the recently released 2010 Proof American Gold Eagle already account for more than 74,000 ounces of gold. The collector offerings were first available for sale from the United States Mint on October 7, 2010.
In addition to gold and silver bullion coins distributed through a network of authorized purchasers, the US Mint also typically offers collectible versions of the coins for direct sale. Numismatic products for the American Gold Eagle were canceled last year due to the demand for bullion coins. With the resumption of sales this year, collectors have returned in force.
Through November 21, the total sales for the 2010 Proof Gold Eagles measured in ounces, already exceed the final sales total for the 2008 offerings by more than 50%. The 2008 Proof Gold Eagles were available for a period of more than ten months.
Maximum product limits for the 2010 Proof Gold Eagles have been established at 25,000 one ounce coins, 15,000 half ounce, 16,000 quarter ounce, 27,000 tenth ounce, and 39,000 of the 4 coin sets. So far the one ounce option has achieved the maximum.
If all options sell out, this would account for 111,350 ounces of gold.

How Old Are Ancient Coins?
The classification of cultures generally tracks along two interrelated lines: chronological and geographical. Chronologically, the primary divisions of coinage are almost universally accepted as being Ancient, Medieval and Modern.
Within the United States, collectors tend to separate U.S. coins from the modern coins of other nations by referring to the latter as "World Coins." Coins in the West were first struck in Western Anatolia during the 7th century BC. The transition point between ancient and medieval is more difficult to date. Some would argue that the end of the ancient period is coincident with the fall of...

US Mint Sales: Silver Proof Set Doubles Gain, Silver Eagles Cross 24.6M
Although United States Mint coin sales slumped in the prior report, the latest round of numbers showed a reversal. In fact, demand for numismatic products improved across nearly every product, minus only eight items. Silver and some gold bullion also gained.
Coin sets again dramatically stood out the most in the latest sales figures. All of the proof sets were higher. The brilliant gem of the group was the 2010 Proof Set. The previous weekly increase had been 27,670, but in this round it was 31,781. The next highest seller was the silver version. The 2010 Silver Proof Set leaped 19,828 versus 8,949 in the prior report.
Individual coins also had some stand-outs. The proof Disabled American Veterans dollar skyrocketed by 2,173 and 2010 Proof Buffalo gold coins nearly doubled when they added 1,301 compared to 678 last time. And finally, 7 out of 8 First Spouse gold coins outperformed previous gains.
The best selling bullion coins were the American Silver Eagles, of course, but one ounce Gold Eagles also surged. The silvers jumped 655,000 compared to 245,000 before and moved their year-to-date total to 24,645,500, while the gold added another 25,500 after doing 22,500 in the prior week. The smaller sized Gold Eagles did not move. The 24-karat American Buffalo bullion coins, however, doubled their prior sales. They advanced 5,000 after growing 2,500 previously.
[Speaking of bullion eagle coins, U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg introduced Palladium Eagle legislation on Wednesday that would, if it became law, authorize the Mint to produced bullion, proof and uncirculated American Eagle Palladium coins. The bill is entitled the American Eagle Palladium Bullion Coin Act of 2010 and is awaiting action in the House Committee on Financial Services.]
The first three columns of the table below provide weekly U.S. Mint coin sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest sales totals as of Sunday, September 19, 2010. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, September 22. The design on the coin's obverse (heads side) features the 1932 portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, restored to bring out subtle details and the beauty of the original model. Inscriptions on the obverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and QUARTER DOLLAR.
"The introduction of a Grand Canyon quarter is a momentous occasion in the human story of the park; so we were thrilled when the Nankoweap granaries were chosen as the design for the reverse side," said Steve Martin, Superintendent of Grand Canyon National Park. "The use of the granaries really seems to connect the coin and today's event to the thousands of years of human history reflected in archeological sites throughout the canyon."

Each year through 2020, the United States Mint will issue five new quarters in the order in which the honored site was first established as a national site. One final coin will be released in 2021.

The Grand Canyon was first established as a national site on February 20, 1893. A powerful and inspiring landscape, the Grand Canyon overwhelms our senses through its immense size - 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide and a mile deep.
Although first afforded Federal protection in 1893 as a forest reserve and later as a national monument, the Grand Canyon did not achieve national park status until 1919, three years after the creation of the National Park Service. Today Grand Canyon National Park receives close to five million visitors every year - a far cry from the 44,173 visitors the park received in 1919.
The United States Mint, created by Congress in 1792, is the Nation's sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage. Its primary mission is to produce an adequate volume of circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce. The United States Mint also produces proof, uncirculated and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; and silver, gold and platinum bullion coins.

Breener’s Lincoln Portrait on One-Cent Coin
Teddy Roosevelt had a good idea when he decided there should be a coin honoring the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Just as good were his choices of the denomination to be used and the sculptor to design it, Victor D. Brenner...

The coin's reverse was designed by AIP Master Designer Richard Masters and sculpted by Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill. The medals are presented by the President in the name of Congress.
"The men and women of the United States Mint are honored by the role we will play in connecting America to the values and qualities of courage, sacrifice and patriotism through the 2011 Medal of Honor Commemorative $5 Gold and Silver Dollar Coins," said Deputy Director Brunhart.
