US Mint Sales: Proof Set and Other Annual Coin Sets Shine

2011 Proof Set 2011 Proof Set

Collector demand rose for many of the annual coin sets in the latest round of United States Mint sales figures. The hottest item was easily the 2011 Proof Set, which contains 14 proof-quality coins representing this year's circulation coinage. Buyers ordered 21,752 of them during the past week. Since its debut on January 11, a weighty 916,466 Proof Sets have sold.

Not far behind was the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle, which rose another 17,701 in this round. Demand tapered off for the third and fourth best sellers, the 2011 Silver Proof Set and the 2011 Mint Set. They climbed 6,766 and 6,140 respectively. The 2011 Uncirculated Silver Eagle rounded out the top five, as it jumped by 4,767 in sales.

In other mint news, the sold-out Grand Canyon Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, whose orders exceeded 27,000 in September, declined again. Now its sales total is down to 26,019. The Mary Lincoln Proof First Spouse Gold Coin is no longer available from the US Mint, and sales of bags and rolls of Mount Hood Quarters will end next Tuesday, November 15.

On the bullion front, only three moved. The American Silver Eagle moved ahead by 541,000 in the last six days, while the one ounce American Gold Eagle advanced by 4,500. In the slow lane was the 24-karat American Gold Buffalo, whose tally only added on 1,000.

All available sales on United States Mint products are below. The first three columns of the table below provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest United States Mint sales totals as of Monday, November 7, 2011. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Thursday, November 10. (NLA = No Longer Available.)

Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter Three-Coin Set Availability

The next America the Beautiful Quarter product is coming soon. The United States Mint announced it will debut the Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter Three-Coin Set on Tuesday, October 18, 2011, at noon Eastern Time. Like similar sets, its price will be $14.95.

The three Vicksburg Quarters that are packaged on a durable plastic card include a proof 2011-S, an uncirculated 2011-P, and an uncirculated 2011-D. In other words, one coin from each of the three United States Mint facilities that produce the coins -- San Francisco, Philadelphia and Denver.

On the back of the card is a brief description of Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi and the quarter's design, as well as a Certificate of Authenticity.

The 2011 Vicksburg quarter reverse was designed by Thomas Cleveland and sculpted by Joseph Menna. The image depicts the U.S.S. Cairo, a Union Navy warship of the Civil War, on the Yazoo River as it would have appeared during service. Inscriptions include VICKSBURG, MISSISSIPPI, 2011 and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

Once available, hobbyists may place an order via the Mint's online store at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog or call 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).

The Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter was released on August 29 and the US Mint began offering them in bags and rolls that afternoon. The U.S. Mint and the National Park Service hosted the quarter launch ceremony on August 30 at the U.S.S. Cairo Museum in the park, in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

As the fourth issue this year, the Vicksburg Three-Coin Set is competing with the Gettysburg National Military Park Quarter Three-Coin Set, Glacier National Park Quarter Three-Coin Set, and Olympic National Park Quarter Three-Coin Set. There are also sets from last year available that honor Hot Springs National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and Mount Hood National Forest.

American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Set, US Mint Schedule Update

American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Set American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Set

Thursday, the United States Mint added one more item to its 2011 schedule, the American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Set. It will launch on Thursday, October 27. Its price, however, is still unknown but will likely be revealed just days before the release.

The set is sure to be a big hit with collectors. It will have a limited mintage of up to 100,000 and contain five coins: three that are available now and two that quite possibly will be unique.

Typically, sets that are limited editions and contain a special coin that cannot be acquired in any other way become not only nice collector items, but good investments that tend to hold their value. The three-coin American Eagle 20th Anniversary Silver Coin Set is an example. It was released in August of 2006 and contained a special reverse proof from Philadelphia. The United States Mint sold the set for $100, but it has a strong aftermarket value, as current bids on eBay are averaging $386.

Other items coming up on the 2011 United States Mint schedule feature America the Beautiful Quarters, gold collector coins and Presidential $1 coin related products.

A breakout of the schedule for upcoming Mint releases follows:

The upcoming quarter-dollar offerings are the Vicksburg Three-Coin Set and the bags and rolls of Chickasaw Quarters, which includes the 100-Coin Quarter Bags (P) and 100-Coin Quarter Bags (D) as well as two-roll sets that contain 40 coins from Denver and 40 coins from Philadelphia.

Also, another set is due out, which is the 2011 America the Beautiful Quarters™ Circulating Coin Set. Last year's set has been popular, and so far, collectors purchased 21,116 of them.

Just two of four new America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins are planned to launch at this time, the Glacier and Olympic silver coins. The dates for the last ones, the Vicksburg and Chickasaw silver coins, have yet to be determined.

In addition, the last Presidential dollar coin and related products will be out soon. They will honor James Garfield, the 20th President, and his wife Lucretia Garfield. The Garfield dollar will be offered in 25-Coin Rolls, and one is in the Garfield $1 Coin Cover and in the Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set.

His wife, Lucretia Garfield, will be featured on the bronze medal sold individually and in the Presidential $1 Coin & Medal Set. She will also be honored on the half-ounce 24-karat proof and uncirculated First Spouse Coins.

It should be noted, the United States Mint prominently states in bold print that its scheduled products listing is not carved in stone, by saying:

"All dates are subject to change by the United States Mint without prior notice."

This site's reference US Mint Release Schedule has also been updated.

$40 Silver Predicted By Year End

Will silver hit $40 by year end?

The latest in depth report on silver from the Silver Institute builds a sound fundamental rationale for a price of $40/ounce or higher by 2011 year end.  The Silver Institute report analyzes the current silver market, sources of investment demand, paper instruments linked to silver, silver mining stocks and privately held silver stocks.

Highlights of the Silver Institute report are summarized below and the full report can be found here.

1.   China and India dominate retail demand for silver but demand from India can be volatile with periods of heavy disinvestment such as occurred in 2009.  The key to silver demand in India remains linked to consumer price expectations and inflation in India has been soaring, reaching almost double digits.

Based on India's current 9% inflation rate, 2012 is likely to see continued huge demand for both gold and silver.   Paper assets currently have little appeal to Indians seeking to preserve their wealth since interest rates are currently negative.  According to an article published at GATA, the yield on ten year notes is almost 1% below the rate of inflation resulting in an erosion of wealth for holders of paper assets.  Savers are reacting accordingly and purchasing precious metals to preserve their wealth.  During October, imports of gold and silver rose 40% to $7.2 billion.

2.   The Silver Institute forecasts that gold and silver will benefit as a safe haven based on the expanding European sovereign debt crisis which appears to be spiraling out of control.  Silver should also benefit from asset reallocation as recession in Europe causes losses in traditional paper assets.

Amazingly, as both paper currencies and governments continue to collapse, investors still have a blind misguided faith in paper assets back only by the "full faith and credit" of insolvent nations.  Proof of this is seen by the Silver Institute's forecast of only a 10% increase in retail demand for bullion coin and small bar in Europe.  Demand for precious metals in the U.S. is forecast even lower at 7%.  Such modest demand for the only currency that cannot be debased by government actions completely refutes those who claim that precious metals are in a bubble.

3.  The Silver Institute forecasts that investment demand in 2011 will reach new record highs of $10 billion.  Chinese demand for physical silver should grow by 25% and Indian demand for silver should increase by a massive 55% to 45 million ounces.  The Institute Report also notes that the silver market in China is still very small since the market for silver was only recently liberalized in 2009.

U.S. investors have also taken the opportunity to capitalize on bargain silver prices.   U.S. Mint sales of American Silver Eagle bullion coins should easily hit an all time record high of over 42 million ounces in 2011.

4.   The Silver Institute notes that the rise in silver prices has correlated with the increased price of gold and also benefited from the introduction of ETF products, such as the iShares Silver Trust (SLV).  The iShares Silver Trust has grown to $10.6 billion with holdings of 314.6 million ounces of silver since its launch in 2006.

The correlation of silver to gold prices, as represented by the gold/silver ratio, also suggests that the price of silver is undervalued.   From a long term historical perspective, a gold/silver ratio of 16 has prevailed.   After dropping from 70 to 30 during the first half of the year, the gold/silver ratio has climbed to 52.  If the gold/silver ratio returns to 16, silver prices could easily reach $110 per ounce based on the current price of gold.

The increasingly tenuous "value" of paper currencies combined with increased worldwide demand for silver as a safe haven asset makes a compellingly bullish case for additional investment in silver.

US Mint Reveals 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar Coin Designs

United States Mint Associate Director of Sales and Marketing B. B. Craig unveiled the 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar Coin designs on Thursday evening, October 27, 2011, before a football game at Fort Benning's Doughboy Stadium in Georgia.

2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar Coin Designs 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar Coin Designs

Large poster displays of the line art designs were on the field and the coin's literature was distributed in the stands. The coin's obverse portrayed the "Follow Me" motto of the Infantry, with an Infantry soldier in stride and carrying his rifle in one hand while signaling with his other hand.

United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Master Designer Joel Iskowitz designed the image which was sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Michael Gaudioso. Inscriptions included LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and 2012.

On the reverse, the infantry's branch insignia was depicted, two rifles crossed. It was designed by US Mint AIP Associate Designer Ronald D. Sanders and sculpted by US Mint Sculptor-Engraver Norman E. Nemeth. Inscriptions consisted of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

An official test strike of the Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar was used for the coin toss between the team captains of the Fort Benning Doughboys and the Columbus State University Cougars. Marv Levy, former head coach of the Buffalo Bills, was invited and tossed the coin.

Up to 350,000 commemorative dollars will be struck under the 2012 National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center Commemorative Coin Program in both proof and uncirculated qualities and each will be composed of 90 percent silver. The surcharges from sales of the coins will be paid to the National Infantry Foundation, a private organization that runs the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center. An issue date of February 2012 is anticipated.

For reference, the United States Mint press release about the 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar Coin designs follows.

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Officials from the United States Mint and National Infantry Foundation, joined by Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipients, unveiled designs for the 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar today at Fort Benning's historic Doughboy Stadium.

"The United States Mint wanted infantry soldiers and their families to be the first people in the nation to see the designs of this new U.S. commemorative silver dollar being created in their honor," said B. B. Craig, Associate Director of Sales and Marketing for the bureau. "So we have come here tonight, joined by these distinguished guests, to unveil the coin designs of the 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar for the first time."

Public Law 110-357 - the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center Commemorative Coin Act of 2008 - authorizes the United States Mint to mint and issue up to 350,000 silver dollar coins to commemorate the legacy of the U. S. Army Infantry and the establishment of the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center. A $10 surcharge included in the price of each coin is authorized to be paid to the National Infantry Foundation.

Marv Levy, former head coach of the National Football League's Buffalo Bills, conducted the coin toss using a prototype of the 90 percent silver dollar for the football game between the Fort Benning Doughboys and the Columbus State University Cougars. The coin's designs are emblematic of the courage, pride, sacrifice, sense of duty, and history of the U.S. Infantry.

The obverse (heads side) features a modern Infantry soldier on rocky ground charging forward and beckoning the troops to follow, symbolizing the "Follow Me" motto of the Infantry. Inscriptions are LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and 2012. The coin's reverse (tails side) features the crossed rifles branch insignia of the Infantry, with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

The 2012 Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar will be available in both proof and uncirculated qualities. Customer demand will determine the ratio of proof and uncirculated coins produced. The United States Mint expects to offer the coin for sale in February 2012.

The United States Mint, created by Congress in 1792, is the Nation's sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage and is responsible for producing circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce. The United States Mint also produces proof, uncirculated and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; and silver, gold and platinum bullion coins.

American Silver Eagle Bullion Sales Soar As Investors Buy At Bargain Prices

The US Mint's latest monthly reports on the sale of American Silver Eagle bullion sales show that investor buying has hit all time record levels.

Total sales of the American Silver Eagle bullion coins in 2010 came in at a record high of 34,662,500.

With over two months remaining in 2011, sales of the American Silver Eagle have already surpassed the record level of 2010 with sales of 36,375,500 ounces.  If sales of the Silver Eagle for November and December match the levels of 2010, total sales for 2011 should total over 42 million ounces or more than 20% above the record breaking sales level of 2010.

A review of sales by month for 2011 indicate solid fundamental buying by silver investors.  Typically, buying of an asset will increase as prices go higher and decrease as prices decline.  This was not the case with the American Silver Eagles - despite a sharp sell off in May and September, monthly sales increased as investors took advantage of bargain prices.

Silver had a volatile year, selling at $30.67 per ounce at the beginning of the year and moving up to a high of $48.70 (as measured by the London PM Fix Price) on April 28th.  Silver closed yesterday at $33.47, up $2.80 or 9.1% on the year.

Based on strong fundamental demand for physical silver, expect silver prices to end the year considerably higher.

Gold Demand Soars On Fears Of European Debt Defaults

After a sharp September price correction, gold is on track to hit all time highs.  According to a Bloomberg survey, 80% of the forecasters with the most accurate track records are predicting that gold will reach $1,950 by the end of the first quarter.   Investors world wide are fleeing paper currencies as the threat of debt defaults spread across Europe.

Ironically, central bank attempts to stimulate debt burdened economies by lowering interest rates to zero has contributed to the worldwide rush to gold.  Why would investors hold return free government debt with the added risk of principal loss?

As financial turmoil spreads across the globe, gold traders are the most bullish since 2004.

Gold traders and analysts are the most bullish in at least seven years as investors accumulate metal at the fastest pace since August to protect their wealth from a widening European debt crisis.

Gold exceeded $1,800 an ounce for the first time in seven weeks on Nov. 8 and hedge funds are holding their biggest bet on higher prices since mid-September, Commodity Futures Trading Commission data show. The metal is rebounding after tumbling as much as 20 percent in three weeks in September on demand for what are perceived as the safest assets. Almost $9 trillion was wiped off the value of global equities since May and yields on Italian and Greek bonds rose to euro-era records this week.

“Throughout history gold has protected people from the sort of turmoil that we’re seeing,” said Mark O’Byrne, the Dublin-based executive director of GoldCore Ltd., a brokerage that sells everything from quarter-ounce British Sovereigns to 400-ounce bars. It’s “an important thing to own when there is this sort of volatility in stock markets and concern about currency devaluations.”

Gold climbed 24 percent to $1,766.72 this year, heading for an 11th consecutive annual advance. It’s the second-best performer behind gas oil in the Standard & Poor’s GSCI Index of 24 commodities, which rose 5 percent.

Technical indicators suggest the rally that began in September has further to go. While gold jumped 14 percent since reaching an 11-week low Sept. 26, its 14-day relative-strength index is at 58, below the level of 70 that indicates to some who study technical charts that the metal is poised to drop.

As discussed previously in this blog, proclamations by the mainstream press after the September gold price correction that the "gold bubble had burst" constituted a contrarian buy signal for gold and silver.  The September correction was simply another opportunity for long term gold investors to add to positions at bargain prices.

The fundamental reasons for owning gold and silver have not changed and are not likely to anytime soon.

US Mint Silver Eagles Score Annual Sales Record, Hayes Coin Cover Debuts

Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Dollar Coin Cover

The two most popular collecting products in the latest United States Mint sales stats were the debuting Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Dollar Coin Cover and the 2011 Proof Set. The newly released coin cover also had a positive impact on the others in its series that are still being offered. Overall, 63 United States Mint products improved over their prior week's gains.

The Hayes Dollar Coin Cover is the third of four scheduled this year. Its debuting numbers reached 14,051 between the launch on Tuesday, October 4, and the Mint's sales count on October 11. The figure came in behind the Ulysses S. Grant Dollar Coin Cover that started in July with 15,695 and also the Andrew Johnson Dollar Cover that opened with 15,459 in March.

Just behind Hayes' cover was the 2011 Proof Set with weekly sales that hit 11,398. Its gain blasted past its previous increase of 8,780. Right now the 2011 Proof Set total is at 856,820, or 78.4 percent of the total achieved by the 2010 Proof Set (1,092,820).

Bullion American Silver Eagles hit a new record. Purchases in October, which are sitting at 1,880,000, have pushed the year-to-date sales up to 35,291,500, thus making 2011 the highest selling year in the series. The old Silver Eagles' annual record was set in 2010 with sales of 34,662,500.

The numismatic proof Silver Eagles also enjoyed better sales after their suspensions were lifted on Friday. Sales rose 3,450 to 755,777. On the flip side, the numismatic uncirculated Silver Eagles had their total fall by 424. Their sales stand at 182,100.

US Mint Collector Platinum Eagle, Gold Coin Prices Lower

2011 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin The proof 2011 American Platinum Eagle and other collector gold coins had their prices cut by the U.S. Mint on Wednesday.

The United States Mint on Wednesday lowered prices on its collector gold coins and the Proof American Platinum Eagle due to lower prices in the precious metals market.

Gold coin prices were reduced for the same reason as the last two weeks, decreases in the yellow metal led to another drop on the Mint's price grid in accordance with its policy. The market price of bullion fell several times in the seven day period, which moved the London Fix weekly gold average two tiers lower in the price grid.

For reference, the gold average moved into the Mint's $1,650 and $1,699.99 an ounce pricing range, which called for gold coin reductions that ranged from $10 to $185. The new prices follow:

Uncirculated American Gold Eagle (1 oz) Proof American Gold Eagle (1 oz) Proof American Gold Eagle (1/2 oz)Proof American Gold Eagle (1/4 oz)Proof American Gold Eagle (1/10 oz) Proof American Gold Eagle 4-Coin Set Uncirculated First Spouse Gold Coins

In total, 14 United States Mint gold coin products had their price tags cut. The First Spouse Gold Coins include the proof and uncirculated strikes that honor Lucy Hayes, Julia Grant, and Eliza Johnson, as well as the proof version for Mary Todd Lincoln.

The United States Mint also dropped the price of the Proof American Platinum Eagle by $200 from $2,092 to $1,892, since platinum also caved in the London market.

There has been no change for the silver coins whose sales were suspended by the United States Mint on Monday, September 26. As of this writing, the Silver Eagles, Silver Proof Sets, and America the Beautiful Five Ounce Coins are still temporarily unavailable.

Note: The Mint's bullion products are produced for investors and have a different pricing scheme than what is used for the collector coins listed above. The United States Mint does not offer bullion coins directly to the public but instead sells them for a small premium to its network of Authorized Purchasers who then resell the coins to coin dealers and precious metals providers. Unlike the collector versions, the bullion coins do not feature the special proof and uncirculated finishes and they do not have mintmarks.

US Mint Sales: Three Products Debut, Bullion Silver Eagles Pass 4 Million

Gettysburg National Military Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin The Gettysburg Silver Uncirculated Coin was one of the three US Mint products with debut sales.

Two of the three newest products debuted at the top of the US Mint sales report. Starting with the best-selling, the most recent items offered were the Olympic National Park Quarter Three-Coin Set, the 2011-P Gettysburg National Military Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, and the Hayes Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set.

The 2011 Olympic National Park Quarter Three-Coin Set was the most popular, hands down. The US Mint launched it on Tuesday, September 20, and by Monday, September 26, collectors purchased 10,891 of them. Its debut was slightly better than the previous issue, featuring the Glacier Quarters, which opened with 10,620 in a similar time frame.

Debut sales for the numismatic Gettysburg National Military Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin hit 9,549, or 27% of its maximum mintage of 35,000 between its release on Thursday, September 22, and Monday. The figure came in low compared to prior releases in the series in large part due to the falling price of silver on the precious metals market. In fact, silver's price was so volatile that the US Mint suspended it and other silver products on Monday.

The Hayes Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set also launched on Thursday, and debut sales showed 1,448 sold by Monday. It was a slow start for the third 2011 set in the Presidential series, since Grant's coin and medal set debut sales were 1,569 in July, and Johnson's set started with 2,362 when it was released in May.

Demand for bullion Silver Eagles skyrocketed over the last eight days. 2,596,000 were purchased, which moved the September total up to 4,000,500. That guaranteed it a spot in the top three all-time highest monthly totals since the coin's inception in 1986.

The one ounce American Gold Eagles picked up 54,500 versus 6,000 in the last report, and the American Buffalo was the next largest gainer with 7,500.

US Mint Sales: Vicksburg Quarter Three-Coin Set Debuts

Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter Three-Coin Set Vicksburg Quarter Three-Coin Set

Sales were higher for 49 United States Mint numismatic products, an improvement that was perhaps due to the launch of a new item, the Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter Three-Coin Set. Silver Eagles also continued to sell in great strides.

The Vicksburg Quarter Three-Coin Set was actually the third best seller for the week. Collectors took in 10,727 of them since their launch on Tuesday, October 18, until Monday, October 24. Compared to other new releases in the America the Beautiful Quarter Three-Coin Set series, it came in around the middle, since the prior 2011 issues opened with 10,891 for Olympic; 10,620 for Glacier; and 12,500 for Gettysburg's set.

The most popular US Mint offerings were the 2011 Proof Set, which had 12,647 in sales, and the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles, which added 11,995 to their total. Both products have been in the top spots for a couple of weeks. The Proof Set's new figure reached 881,854 and the Proof Silver Eagles clocked in at 783,787.

In bullion news, every coin advanced. The latest year-to-date numbers come to 36,375,500 for the American Silver Eagles, and in the American Gold Eagles arena, the one ounce coins are at 802,500; the half-ounce moved up to 65,000; the quarter-ounce ended up at 78,000; and the one-tenth ounce have 355,000. American Buffalo gold coins also moved up to 145,000.

US Mint Sales: 2011 Proof Silver Eagles Back on Top

2011 American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

Although the latest sales report was a shorter week than the last, 2011 Proof Silver Eagles made it back to the top of the sales chart with a gain of 16,015 in six days. In the previous report, they climbed 3,674 over eight days.

Perhaps the factors helping the Silver Eagles were its lower price and publicity for being part of the 5-coin 25th Anniversary Set. The US Mint decreased its price on October 7 by $9.50, and it announced the upcoming Anniversary Set's price will be $299.95.

Not far behind the Eagles' top position was the 2011 Proof Set. It rose by an impressive 12,387 and beat its prior increase of 11,398. The third most popular numismatic item was the 2011 Uncirculated Silver Eagle, which improved by 8,827.

In bullion news, the American Silver Eagles were the biggest movers. The US Mint's network of Authorized Purchasers (AP's) took in 802,000 of them since Wednesday, October 12. The Silver Eagle's new record total is now resting at 36,043,500. The AP's also scooped up 15,000 one ounce and 5,000 one-tenth ounce American Gold Eagles and 4,500 American Buffalo gold coins.

US Mint Sales: Uncirculated Silver Eagles Down, 2011 Proof Set Most Popular

2011 Silver Proof Set, 2011 Mint Set, 2011 Proof Set

When the latest United States Mint sales figures were released on Monday, it was no surprise that sales of its silver numismatic products would be down. After all, most of them had been suspended by the Mint for nearly a week. As it turned out, five of the six products in the line up that decreased were silver. Most of the gold products were up, and the annual clad sets were most popular.

The highlights were as follows... 2011 Uncirculated Silver Eagles caved the most. Its sales total decreased by 11,476. Fourteen gold products outperformed their prior week's gains, with the one-tenth ounce Proof Gold Eagles improving the most in the gold category. And, the number one selling item was the 2011 Proof Set, which leaped by 8,780.

In the bullion coin market, a new historic record is about to be made. American Silver Eagles are 239,000 sales away from matching the highest selling year in the series. As it stands, 34,423,500 bullion Silver Eagles sold this year, and the record to beat was set in 2010 with sales of 34,662,500.

US Mint Sales: Glacier National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin Debuts

Glacier National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin Glacier National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin

The Glacier National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin, released October 25, debuted in the latest United States Mint sales figures, but it was not the best selling item. The American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Set and the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle both out shined the five ouncer coin.

As described in an earlier article, customers acted quickly when the 25th Anniversary Set launched from the Mint on Thursday, October 27, and the maximum limit of 100,000 orders was hit within five hours -- it was officially called "sold out" by the United States Mint Friday morning.

Collectors also grabbed 22,110 of the 2011 Proof Silver Eagles, up from the 11,995 in the prior report. The other Eagle offering, however, did not experience the same kind of attention. The 2011 Uncirculated Silver Eagle fell by -12,464.

The Glacier National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin is the seventh in the America the Beautiful coin series. Its debuting sales reached 10,680 between the launch on Tuesday, October 25, and Monday October 31. The figure came in a little higher than the Gettysburg coin that started in September with 9,549, but it was lower than the Mount Hood strike that opened with 14,759 in July.

In bullion news, the American Silver Eagles kept a steady, although slowing growth pace. Last month closed as the second best ever October and the 14th highest month in the Silver Eagle history. Plus, the United States Mint's Authorized Purchasers picked up another 376,000 for the beginning of November, which boosted annual sales up to 36,851,500 (figures updated Friday, Nov. 4).

Chickasaw Quarters Bags and Rolls, Ceremonial Launch and Coin Exchange

Chickasaw Quarter Chickasaw National Recreation Area Quarter

Two recent announcements from the United States Mint revealed the details of the upcoming ceremonial launch of the 2011 Chickasaw quarter and the coin exchange that will follow, plus the sale of the quarters in bags and rolls.

As the tenth design in the America the Beautiful Quarters® and being the fifth and last for 2011, the latest quarter honors Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma.

Its reverse features the picturesque limestone Lincoln Bridge located along the Travertine Creek in the park. U.S. Mint Master Designer Donna Weaver designed the image, and U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz engraved it.

The first product to debut will go on sale Monday, November 14, at noon Eastern Time. 100-coin bags of the 2011 Chickasaw quarter will be $49.95 and the two-roll set will be $39.95. The set will consist of 80 quarters in all, with 40 from the mint facility in Philadelphia and the other 40 from the facility in Denver. The 100-coin bags will come from either facility of the buyer's choice.

When the items launch, they will be available at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog or 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). The shipping and handling charge will be $4.95 on all domestic orders.

It should be noted that Monday, November 14, will also be the day that the Federal Reserve Bank will release the new quarters into circulation through various financial institutions. Since it may take a while for the strikes from both Philadelphia and Denver to make their way into pocket change, many collectors will simply buy their quarters straight from the U.S. Mint in bags or rolls.

On Tuesday, November 15, the United States Mint will host a coin forum at 7 PM for the public, in preparation for the special coin launch ceremony the next day. Tuesday night's coin forum will be held at the Travertine Nature Center Auditorium in the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, and U.S. Mint officials will be on hand to answer any questions about US coins, programs, and initiatives.

Finally, on Wednesday, November 16 at 11 a.m., the U.S. Mint and the National Park Service will host the Chickasaw Quarter Ceremonial Launch at Flower Park in Sulphur, Oklahoma. (The ceremony was originally scheduled to be by the Point at the Lake of the Arbuckles.) Children in attendance will receive a free Chickasaw quarter.

Speakers will include B.B. Craig, US Mint Associate Director for Sales and Marketing and Bruce Noble, Chickasaw National Recreation Area Superintendent.

Immediately following the ceremony will be a coin exchange, where adults can buy rolls of the new quarters at face value, $10 each, from a local bank's booth that will be set up near the speakers' stage. If tradition ensues, many attendees will go through the line for the coin exchange several times until all of the new quarter rolls are gone.

Below is the official United States Mint press release about the Chickasaw Quarters Bags and Two-Roll Sets.

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint will begin accepting orders for 100-coin bags and two-roll sets containing the new quarter-dollar honoring Chickasaw National Recreation Area on November 14, 2011, at noon Eastern Time (ET). The bags are priced at $49.95 each and the two-roll sets at $39.95 each.

The coins in the bags and rolls were struck on the main production floors of the United States Mint facilities at Denver and Philadelphia for use in general circulation but have never been released into circulation.

The two-roll sets (40 coins per roll) include one roll each bearing the "P" and "D" mint marks. The special numismatic packaging displays the name "Chickasaw National Recreation Area," the abbreviation "OK" for Oklahoma, "$10," the value of its contents, and "P" or "D" for the mint of origin. Each canvas bag has a tag with "Chickasaw National Recreation Area," "OK," and "P" or "D."

Orders will be accepted at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog or at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).  Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order at 1-888-321 MINT (6468). A fee of $4.95 will be added to all domestic orders to cover shipping and handling costs.

The Chickasaw National Recreation Area quarter is the fifth coin released in 2011 and the 10th overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. The site is unique in that it was the support of an Indian tribe, the Chickasaw Nation. It was first established as a national site on July 1, 1902 (32 Stat. 641).

Note:  To ensure that all members of the public have fair and equal access to United States Mint products, orders placed prior to the official on-sale date and time of November 14, 2011, noon ET shall not be deemed accepted by the United States Mint and will not be honored.  For more information, please review the United States Mint's Frequently Asked Questions, Answer ID #175.

Below is the official United States Mint media advisory about the Chickasaw National Recreation Area Quarter launch ceremony, coin exchange, and coin forum.

Officials from the United States Mint, the National Park Service and the Oklahoma state legislature - along with scores of local schoolchildren - will celebrate the release of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area Quarter on November 16, 2011.

The ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m. Central Time (CT), in Flower Park on the grounds of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Highlights of the free event will include a coin exchange where the public can swap their cash for $10 coin rolls containing the new Chickasaw National Recreation Area Quarter.

American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Sets Shipping

American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Set

American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Sets are now shipping -- at least beginning to for orders that were placed early on October 27 when the sets were released. The sets quickly sold out as buyers snapped up all 100,000 in about 4 1/2 hours, which means it will likely take some time before they all get delivered.

Reports began surfacing earlier Wednesday, November 8, that the United States Mint began updating order statuses for American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Sets. Early orders were denoted with having been shipped and tracking numbers provided. The United States Mint also began sending out e-mail shipping confirmation announcements.

There has been an enormous amount of anticipation surrounding the sets, as is apparent from their sellout. Since then, the buzz has grown even stronger -- ranging from collector complaints over the inability to order one, a United States Mint announced review of their release due to said complaints, and soaring secondary market values. On the latter, eBay stopped auctions of American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Sets as it told sellers they must first have possession of them. Before the stoppage, prices for single sets were actually being pre-sold for at least two times the Mint's $299.95 selling price.

The American Eagle 25th Anniversary Silver Coin Set includes five one ounce Eagles which commemorate the series that debuted in 1986. The five coins are:

The last two coins are unique to the set as the other three are available individually and produced annually.

Why Gold And Silver Prices Will Continue To Rise

The September correction in the price of gold and silver resulted in a flood of bearish articles by the mainstream press, proclaiming that the "gold and silver bubbles" had burst.

Since the mainstream press does not comprehend why precious metals have been in a bull market for the past ten years, the proclamation of the "end of the gold and silver bull markets" was, in reality, a contrarian bullish call.

Every long term bull market has sharp sell offs and gold and silver are no exception to this rule.  The sharp rise of gold prices during the summer attracted hot money from speculators and hedge funds who quickly liquidated positions based on short term technical sell signals, driving down the price of gold by over $300 per ounce.

As previously discussed, the fundamental reasons for owning gold and silver have not changed - in fact, they have grown stronger.  The September sell off in precious metal prices was simply another fantastic opportunity for long term investors to increase positions at bargain prices.

Long term investors in precious metals have outperformed virtually every asset class for the past ten years.  Even after the panic selling of September, gold still held gains of over 20% on the year from a price of $1,405 at the start of 2011.  Silver, despite a very volatile year, also remains above its price of $30.67 at the beginning of the year.

Both gold and silver remain in established long term up trends and remain at oversold, bargain level prices.

One strong fundamental factor providing support for further price gains in gold and silver comes from Mark Hulbert, whose Hulbert Financial Digest measures newsletter sentiment on the gold market.  Recent readings of the Hulbert Gold Newsletter Sentiment Index (HGNSI) (tracked by the Hulbert Financial Digest) revealed that at the end of last week gold timers were extremely bearish on gold.

The HGNSI readings dropped to the most bearish level in two and a half years, with gold market timers recommending a 13% short allocation in gold portfolios.  Hulbert's research shows that gold usually rises when gold timers are very bearish.  Hulbert notes that gold timers have not been this bearish since March of 2009 - a level from which gold prices subsequently doubled.

US Mint Suspensions Return: Silver Eagles, Sets, ATB Five Ounce Coins

2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin

On Monday, the United States Mint again suspended sales of several numismatic silver coin products, including its Silver Eagles, Silver Proof Sets, and America the Beautiful Five Ounce Coins. As of now, no gold products were affected.

The annual silver sets already experienced several suspensions this year due to volatile precious metals prices, but this time it was for falling prices and involved many more Mint issues. It is not known how long the silver product sales will be halted, but cheaper prices are expected when sales resume -- as long as silver prices do not jump significantly higher.

The white precious metal took a nose dive between Wednesday, September 21, when it was $40.25 on the London Fix and Monday, September 26, when it hit $28.16. However, at least a partial recovery was just around the corner as the London Fix listed the metal at $33.50 an ounce today.

If the United States Mint decides to lower its prices on the silver products, the new prices would likely be published in a memo from the Department of the Treasury in the Federal Register, an official daily publication for government notices, before they go into effect.

So far, the suspended items include:

2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin2011 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin2011 America The Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™ 2010 America The Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™ 2011 U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set 2010 U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set 2011 Gettysburg National Military Park ATB Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin2010 Mount Hood National Forest ATB Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin

The United States Mint commemorative silver coins and medals are still available. Their prices are based on a different model, as are the numismatic gold coin products. The Mint has a published coin pricing grid for most of those items, and prices are re-evaluated and adjusted as needed every Wednesday.

US Mint Coin Products Page with Final Sales

An assortment of American coin products with final sales dates are now listed on a new United States Mint's "Last Opportunity" online store page. They include six sets and ten gold, silver, and clad commemorative coins, as well as some America the Beautiful Quarters® and Presidential $1 coin rolls.

At the top of the online page, there is a warning that any of the coin products may sell out before the deadline. The Mint continues with a few rules for their last opportunity sale.

The United States Mint wrote, "This is a limited-time, first-come, first-served offer and no household limits will apply. A 7-day return policy is in effect. No returns will be accepted unless the product was delivered to the customer damaged. If a return is made because the product is damaged, we cannot guarantee a replacement. You will receive a refund if we cannot replace your order ..."

At the time of this writing, twenty-two items have been given a countdown with ending sales dates. A couple of them coincide closely with the launch of the next issue in a series. Once the time expires, however, the products will be officially discontinued and no longer sold by the Mint. The coin products and their deadlines follow.

US Mint Ends Numismatic Silver Product Suspensions, Gold Coin Prices Reduced

2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin

The United States Mint has ended the sales suspensions for its numismatic silver product offerings. The coins were made available Friday, October 7, and the silver sets returned earlier in the week. The difference was the coins came back with lower prices while the price of the sets were the same.

The eight items that were temporarily suspended on Monday, September 26, 2011 and are now available are listed below with their current prices.

US Mint Numismatic Silver Products2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin 2011 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin 2011 Gettysburg National Military Park ATB Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin 2010 Mount Hood National Forest ATB Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin 2011 America The Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™ 2010 America The Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™ 2011 U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set 2010 U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set

The collector silver coins' lower prices are attributed to the lower price of silver in the precious metals market. After its price tumbled to $28.16 an ounce in the London Fix on September 26, it has not recovered to its previous level in the $40 range. In fact, the highest it has reached since then was $33.50 on September 27. Friday's silver price was $31.80.

Prices also dropped for numismatic gold product coins on Wednesday, October 5. The United States Mint uses a published price grid for its gold products and regularly makes adjustments as needed each Wednesday. This week the market price of gold was down, again, so the Mint decreased prices accordingly. The following changes were made below.

US Mint Numismatic Gold ProductsUncirculated First Spouse Coins

The available proof and uncirculated versions of the First Spouse Coins feature Lucy Hayes, Julia Grant and Eliza Johnson. The proof honoring Mary Todd Lincoln is also for sale. The Lincoln uncirculated version sold out a few months earlier.

Additionally, the proof American Platinum Eagle had its price reduced by $100 from $1,892.00 to $1,792.00, also because platnum prices fell.

A few of the items listed above were recently given a cut-off date in the US Mint's Last Opportunity Sale. They include the Mary Todd Lincoln Proof First Spouse Coin, the 2010 Silver Proof Set, and the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set.

Check out this site's coins section for more information on the above United States Mint product offerings, or visit the bureau's website at http://www.usmint.gov/.

US Mint Sales: 2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin Starts Strong

The 2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated coin started off strong in its first few days on the market, the latest United States Mint sales stats revealed.

2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin

Also, the stats show that several annual sets experienced improved week-over-week numbers, but one product in the line-up lost over 2,000 from its sales total.

First up is news about the Mint's highest collector product seller for the week. The uncirculated Silver Eagle debuted with 184,967 orders between its launch on Thursday, September 15 and Monday, September 19. Since there are no household limits for the uncirculated coin and its new, sales should remain solid.

The American Eagle Silver Proof was among 52 products that outperformed their prior week's sales. 5,785 sold in this round compared to 5,081 previously. But, the popular proof strike was #3 on the top-seller chart. Besides the debuting uncirculated coin, the only other product to beat the proof Eagle was the 2011 Proof Set with a gain of 7,218. Its increase was significant, considering it only rose by 4,063 previously.

The item whose sales total was ruptured with a 2,132 decrease was the West Point strike of the 9/11 Silver Medal. Its total fell from 101,259 down to 99,127. Possible reasons for the decline could be returns, cancellations, problem orders, or an accounting adjustment. In the last report, the silver medal from West Point added 2,348.

Demand for bullion coins eased over the last six days. The bullion American Silver Eagle advanced by 478,500 compared to 751,000 previously, and the one ounce American Gold Eagles picked up 6,000 versus 20,000 in the last report. The one tenth ounce Gold Eagle was the next largest gainer with 5,000, but its prior increase had been 15,000.

All available sales on United States Mint products are below. The first three columns of the table below provide weekly United States Mint sales increases between the listed time periods, offering a sense of recent trends. The final column provides the latest United States Mint sales totals as of Monday, September 19, 2011. Bullion coin tables are found toward the bottom, with the most recent sales as of Wednesday, September 21. (NLA = No Longer Available.)

2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin Price and New Launch Date

2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin 2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin

The United States Mint published an official press release announcing the revived availability of the 2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin and its price. The uncirculated strikes will launch at 12:00 noon Eastern Time on Thursday, September 15, 2011 for $60.45, and there will be no household limits.

News of the coin's return was recorded in early August when the U.S. Mint updated their online Product Schedule page with a date for the launch. That date has since been moved up by two weeks.

As with other numismatic coins containing precious metals, the Mint reserves the right to suspend sales and reprice the product if the metal market begins to change significantly. A price adjustment occurred not too long ago for this reason for another 2011 American Silver Eagle. On August 24, the Mint halted sales of the 2011 Proof Silver Eagle, and when it resumed on August 29, its price had been raised by $8.50 from $59.95 to $68.45.

The American Eagle Silver uncirculated coin had been on a hiatus since 2008, due to unprecedented demand for bullion silver coins in 2009 and 2010. After securing more resources and receiving more freedom to produce collector coins, the Mint has made better strides to keep up with soaring demand.

The collector uncirculated Silver Eagle will have a "burnished" finish and the "W" mint mark to indicate it was produced at the Mint's West Point facility. It will come encapsulated within a protective presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity.

The United States Mint's press release regarding the announcement for the 2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coins follows.

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint will offer 2011 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coins beginning at noon Eastern Time (ET) on September 15, 2011. The one-ounce .999 silver coin is currently priced at $60.45. As with all products sold by the United States Mint containing precious metals, pricing is subject to change.

Struck on specially burnished blanks, American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coins feature a finish similar to their bullion counterparts but carry the "W" mint mark, indicating production at the United States Mint at West Point. Each coin is encapsulated in protective plastic and placed in a blue presentation case accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

The obverse (heads side) design of the American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin features an image of Lady Liberty in full stride enveloped in the folds of the American flag with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. The reverse (tails side) design of the coin depicts a heraldic eagle with shield, an olive branch in the right talon and arrows in the left.

Orders will be accepted at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog or at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order at 1-888-321-MINT (6468). A $4.95 shipping and handling charge will be added to all domestic orders. There is no household order limit.

Note: To ensure that all members of the public have fair and equal access to United States Mint products, orders placed prior to the official on-sale date and time of September 20, 2011, at noon ET shall not be deemed accepted by the United States Mint and will not be honored. For more information, please review the United States Mint's Frequently Asked Questions, Answer ID #175.

The United States Mint, created by Congress in 1792, is the Nation's sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage and is responsible for producing circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce.
