The United States Mint this week reduced prices for its numismatic gold coins following sustained declines in gold which started early in 2011.
The US Mint cut all eight of its First Spouse Gold Coins by $25 and its Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin by $50.
Since numismatic 2011 gold coins have not been released by the US Mint yet, the reductions only affect the 2010 Proof Gold Buffalo and the 2010 First Spouse Gold Coins, including the proof and uncirculated versions of the:
Abigail Fillmore First SpouseJane Pierce First SpouseJames Buchanan's Liberty First SpouseMary Todd Lincoln First SpouseEach of these happens to be composed of 24 karat gold. The proof versions went from $854 to $829 while the uncirculated options went from $841 to $816. The proof buffalo dropped from $1,660 to $1,610.
Gold prices ended last year around $1,410 an ounce, marking their 10th annual gain. On Friday, the London Fix dropped to $1,319 an ounce for the precious metal. Since the US Mint uses a weekly average of the London Fix, the drop-off in those prices is what led to the cut in prices of the aforementioned coins.
The current gold range the US Mint is now using for pricing is between $1,300 and $1,349.99 an ounce. Should the weekly average drop below or above the range, the US Mint will again adjust what it charges for its numismatic coins.
